The Baptist Standard July 4, 1907
Fifty members constituted themselves into a church known as the Hickory Street 
Baptist Church, Dallas, on the 27th of last month.  Ministers present and 
taking part in the organization were J. Frank Norris, W. R. Covington, W. J. 
Ponder, Byron Bibbs.  This organization has been needed for a long time.  It is 
in the midst of a dense population of several thousand, which has been 
neglected for all these years by any Baptist organization, save a mission 
fostered by the First Church.  The noble Second Church, true to its missionary 
character, struggling with its own heavy burdens, has maintained a foothold, a 
starting point for this community.  The new church called Bro. W. R. Covington 
as pastor.  Bro. Covington is a wise, energetic and enthusiastic worker.  The 
new organization, under the capable leadership of this godly man, will have a 
rapid growth.  The secret of his success is personal work.  He "buttonholes" 
every man in his community.  Dallas, like other great cities, is in desparate 
need of several other churches in neglected fields in which thousands live who 
never hear the gospel.  Young men of rare gifts and fine equipment, who are 
seeking places and opportunities for work, will do well to consider the 
neglected thousands in our large cities.  The man who will undertake such a 
work, beginning with practically nothing, and build up a great church, will do 
a work that shall outlive the stars.  May the blessings of heaven rest on this 
new daughter and the old mother church.
