OLD NEGRO MAN KILLED.

A House Falls on Him, Crushing Him to Death.

HOUSTON, Tex., March 13 - - To-day, in the fourth ward, Reuben Smith, an old
colored man, was crushed to death by a house falling upon him. It was a small
two-room structure, which was being raised by means of jackscrews. It had been
raised fully two feet, one end considerably more than the other, and when
Smith attempted to remove a block from beneath the lower end by pulling it
out, the house, already leaning that way, came forward with a crash, pinning
his body to the ground and killing him instantly. The lower edge of the
building caught him near the center of the body. Every effort was made to
raise it off him before he died, but of no avail. He had been living several
years in that part of town was keeping a little store at the time.
