COLE After Remaining Unconscious Since the Accident on Feb. 28. He Died Early Monday. George C. Cole, who fell from an engine in the Katy Railroad yard on Feb. 22, died at St. Paul’s Sanitarium yesterday morning at 3:30 o’clock, having continued unconscious since the accident. Deceased was born in Dallas County Aug. 8, 1857, and was the son of John H. Cole and grandson of Dr. John Cole, who settled here in 1842. He graduated from Add Ran College in 1881 and began the practice of law in Dallas in 1882. In connection with the law he for many years did real estate business. In 1886 Mr. Cole was elected Alderman from the Eighth Ward and served the city in the capacity for six years. In the winter of 1891 he was in Austin during the session of the Legislature by appointment of the Dallas City Council for purpose of urging approval of what is now the “old charter”. While in Austin he was notified of his nomination by the city Democracy for the Mayor of Dallas. W. C. Conner opposed him, and the most intensely exciting local political contest in the history of Dallas resulted. He was defeated. During the last few years he continued his attention to law and real estate and did not serve in any public official capacity, except as Assistant County Attorney under J. C. Gillespie. At the time of the accident he had gone into the Katy yards to see a man to whom he had sold some property, and the rain and snow coming up, he jumped on an engine on the suggestion of a friend who was with him, for the purpose of hastening to shelter, and in jumping off his feet slipped and he fell with terrific force to the ground striking on his forehead. The case having begun to seem hopeless desperate remedies were decided on. Last Monday he was removed from his home at 141 Payne street to St. Paul’s Sanitarium and a surgical operation was performed. The operation was fruitless, nothing being found affecting the brain. He was married to Miss Susan Bennet of Kaufman and leaves her a widow with six children, the oldest being a boy of 16. He was a Knight of Pythias and a member of the First Christian Church.
