FIRST MARRIAGE IN COUNTY

Performed in 1846 by Judge Hord, Who Died Last Tuesday and Was Buried
Yesterday

The funeral of Judge W. H. Hord, the Dallas county pioneer who died Tuesday
night at his home in West Dallas, occurred yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Interment was in the family cemetery on Cedar Creek, south of Oak Cliff and
near the dam.

Judge Hord came here when this county was in its swaddling clothes, so to
speak. His experiences in those early days furnished him with a fund of
stories that were always entertaining.

He was born April 6, 1808 in Charlotte County, Virginia, and thus came near
living in three centuries. From Virginia he moved to Tennessee and there
married a Mrs. McKenzle, the sister of the famous John M. Crockett. He came to
Texas in 1845. He performed the first marriage ceremony to occur in Dallas
County after its organization. This was on July 23, 1846 and the contracting
parties were Crawford Treece and Miss Annie M. Kimmel. He also had the
distinction of being one of the First Judges of this County. During the war
between the States he held a General's commission in the Confederate army.
