E. S. Martin, a former Representative in Congress from this district. He died of typhoid fever, in the city of Dallas, Texas on the 5th instant. Tho deceased was elected to Congress in 1859 as an "independent" candidate, over Col. K. K. Floyd, of Wytheville, the regular nominee of the Democratic party. He was a candidate for a seat In the Congress of the Confederate States in 1861, but withdrew from the canvass, raised a company in his native county, and entered the army as a Captain in Col. John A. Campbell's 48th Regiment. In 1870 he removed to Tarrant county, Texas, and there spent the remainder of his days. Capt. Martin was a brother of Col. Win. H. Martin, of Lee county, and of Col. H. D. Martin, Tilden and Hendricks Elector for the State of Texas. Another brother, Col. John M. Martin, at one time represented a Kentucky district in the Congress of the United States.
