Kendall, Esq., of Dallas, Texas, on the morning of Friday, Feb. 17, 1871, John G. Pipkin, a native of Alabama - born October 17, 1841. The subject of the above notice, like all noble native sons of the South, when the tocsin of war sounded in 1861, hastened to enter the service of his beloved land, and joined Terry's regiment of volunteers, (afterwards Harrison's brigade) in which he served faithfully as a private till the close of the struggle. He then removed to Texas, where he soon afterwards married his accomplished wife. He was subsequently elected by the people of Jefferson County to the office of County Clerk, which he filled acceptably. In the fall of 1869 he removed to Dallas County, where he drew around him a warm circle of friends. But the germ of disease which had been implanted in his system during those days and nights spent in his country's service, at last brought down the strong man to the grave. You who have watched the ebbing tide of life drift slowly out upon the ocean of eternity, you who have heard the hollow rumble of the clods upon the coffin lid of those most loved, and listened to the solemn words, "Earth to earth and dust to dust", you only can realize the grief. Then, while we drop tears of regret at the loss of our friend, let us remember the bereaved wife and orphaned child with tenderest sympathy. May the sorrowing widow be comforted by the recollection that although "the grave hath won him," he yet lives; for even as the mists of Death enshrowded him, his trust was firm in Him who said, "I am the Resurrection and the Life."
