SMITH Ceremonies for Pioneer of Dallas County, Who Died Saturday, Were Largely Attended The funeral of J. I. Smith, a pioneer citizen of Dallas County, who died at his home near Wilmer Saturday, was held yesterday morning. Mr. Smith was widely known over the county and the funeral was largely attended, many people going from Dallas, including a delegation of Odd Fellows. Born in Arkansas about seventy-two years ago, Mr. Smith came early to Texas and for more than fifty years he had been a citizen of this county. As a youth Mr. Smith carried the United States Mail between Dallas and Waco at a time long before there were railways in Texas. He had many strange experiences and was ever a ready teller of the interesting episodes. Surviving him are his widow and nine children. Sam J. Smith, one of the sons, resides in Dallas at 140 Fourth Avenue. All live in this county. Title: Funeral of J. I. Smith Date: 1907-04-08 Page: 3
