Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Andrea Bryant Ramsay April 6, 2002 ************************************************************************ James Taliaferro "Tall" Jones Pilot Point, Denton county, Texas James Taliaferro "Tall" Jones, was an early photographer and businessman in Pilot Point. James Jones moved with his parents to Florida when he was 2 years old. Jones was a Confederate veteran serving in the War Between the States 1862-1865. He was in the 2nd Calvary was discharged at Quincy, FL, May16, 1865. Soon after his discharge, he moved to Grimes County, TX with his mother and family, later moving to Madison County, Texas and finally to Denton in 1873 where he became identified with the public interest of Pilot Point. He entered into partnership with D. J. Moffet, as senior editor of the Pilot Point Post, one of the pioneer newspapers of North Texas. He was a staunch religious man, a deacon of the Baptist Church for years. A large sofa-sized photograph of downtown Pilot Point, taken around or before 1900 by Tall Jones is in the possession of Beverly McFall, of Dallas, Texas, a descendant of his sister. NOTE: On October 8, 1866, Pilot Point was incorporated. During Reconstruction, violence in the community made it necessary for nine policemen to be employed to keep order. In 1878 Pilot Point's citizens repealed their charter and were no longer an incorporated community. That year the first newspaper, the Pilot Point Post, was published by D. J. Moffitt and James Taliaferro Jones.
