Holmes, whose death occurred eight years ago, had died suddenly at her home in Aubrey at 3 o'clock Wednesday morning Dec. 23. Mrs. Holmes and her son Clarence lived alone. The son states that about 3 o'clock he heard a slight noise in his mother's room and arose. He could see that the light was burning and went to investigate and found that his mother had gotten up and lighted the lamp and had fallen. There was no sign of life and the son believes she was dead when he reached her. Mrs. Holmes was not known to have any trouble that threatened her life in this manner. The only complaint her son had heard was a day or two before when she stated that the neighbors had been sending in fresh meat and she had been eating too much of it and it kept her from sleeping well the night before. The affair was a great shock to the people of Aubrey and the entire western part of Collin County, where Mrs. Holmes was well known. Mrs. Holmes was born Sept. 27, 1853, and was married to E.B. Homes April 14, 1869. Her maiden name was Julia Amanda Robertson and she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Robertson toTexas in 1856 from Arkansas. She and her husband lived on what is now the Spann farm, eight miles north of town, later purchasing the farm owned by Jeff Malone, whre they resided for ten years. They were a sturdy pioneer couple who had the welfare of their fellowman at heart, and those who knew them as neighbors had nothing but words of praise for them. They were members of the Christian Church and were always active in advancing its interests. Deceased leaves two brothers and sisters as follows: Lawson and Billie Robertson, Denton; Mrs. George Owens, Mrs. Cora Lowder, Mrs. Charlie Pearson and Mrs. Alile Thomas, Denton; Mrs. G.B. Rose, Frisco. The surviving children of deceased are Rev. Eugene Holmes, San Marcos; Mrs. W. Campbell, Denton; Mrs. George W. Darnall, Celina; Mrs. R.K. Thomas, San Angelo; Tullis Holmes, San Angelo; Paul Holmes, Waco; George Holmes, Dallas; Carl Holmes, Houston; Clarence Holmes, Aubrey; Mrs. E.W. Caddell, Corcoran, Cal. The burial of Mrs. Holmes was at Ballew cemetery Thursday, beside her husband. Rev. R.C. Horn, of McKinney, Rev. Winn, her former pastor at Aubrey, and Rev. Earsom, pastor of the First Christian Church at Denton, conducted the service. Bro. Horn had known deceased from childhood, not only her, but her parents and husband, and he paid a very beautiful tribute to the life and character for this good woman. The funeral was largely attended and a profusion of flowers worked into beautiful designs were bestowed. Contributor's Note: Typed from old newspaper clipping of my grandmother's(Exa Holmes Darnall), but the newspaper name and date were cut off. It is probably The Denton Record Chronicle. Her date of death was Dec. 23, 1925.
