All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************** Banner Stockman Clarendon, TX Friday, 2 July 1908 Cuero, TX – 27 June Monk Gibson died this afternoon for the murder of the Conditt family in Edna in September 1905. He was executed. He was led from the jail to the gallows erected in the jail yard, open to public viewing. He made no confession and all that he said when on the gallows was “not guilty”. 3,000 people came to Cuero to see the hanging. Gibson is the second to pay the death penalty for this crime. Felix Powell having been hung at Victoria last year. The history of the crime was the husband and father were away from home, when the mother, a 14 year old daughter, and three sons were butchered at their home, the two women being out-raged. Monk Gibson was convicted on circumstantial evidence. On June 3rd, in the Jericho chapel, Frances Mae, eldest daughter of Judge and Mrs. J.H. Altizer of Jericho and Vin Welch Moore of Tucumcari, NM were married officiated by Rev. O.M. Yerger, of St. John’s Episcopal church of Clarendon. Attendants were Miss Bertha Altizer, sister of the bride, and maid of honor. Charles Chenault, best man. Ring bearer was Miss Katherine Patrick of Clarendon. Users were M.M Muikler of La Grange, IL, Dr. C. Mac Stanfill of Tucumcari.
