He was born 10 Mar 1873 in Cooper, Delta County, Texas, and moved west after running away from home as a teenager, probably about age 14 or 15. His mother died when he was just 7, so it's believed he didn't get along too well with his stepmother after his father remarried little more than 18 months after his mother passed. He decided to run off and become a cowboy out west, and he ended up in the Panhandle. He learned to be a cowboy and worked for the Goodnight Ranch. John married Jennie Ilar Ray on 22 Nov 1900 in Clarendon. They were residents of Donley County for 40+ years, where John was owner of the J.H. Clark Livery Stable in Clarendon for several of those. He died on 23 Feb 1945 from injuries received in a car accident as he pulled off Hwy 287 to check his mailbox. John is buried in Citizen's Cemetery in Clarendon along with his wife Jennie.
