His father was a "Cowboy" on a working cattle ranch and his mother was the daughter of a Czechoslovakian immigrant steel-mill foreman. After the Great Depression the young and rustic couple moved to California with Lloyd and his younger brother Don. Growing up, Lloyd was a frequent patron of school and public libraries where he cultivated his lifelong love of reading and learning. He participated in sports as well as the debate team in High School. After earning a degree in Aeronautical Engineering he was inducted into the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was elevated to the rank of corporal while still in basic training and shortly thereafter to Sergeant and served in the African and European campaigns of WWII. Lloyd and his fiance, Wanda, entered Pacific Bible Seminary in Long Beach in February of 1946 and were married on August 12 that same year. Lloyd earned his B.A., Bachelors of Divinity, and a Masters of Divinity while serving as a much-in-demand "supply preacher" and serving two successive student ministries at Maricopa and Newhall Christian Churches. He served as the associate pastor of Lawndale Christian Church before accepting the Senior Minister positions at Compton Westside Christian Church, Parkcrest Christian Church in Lakewood, and the First Christian Church of Dalhart, Texas. In 1959 he became the President of Southern Christian College in San Antonio, Texas. Returning to California he served several Churches including Hillcrest Christian Church (now Shepherd of the Hills), among others, and as the CEO of the Church Building and Loan Fund. His last sermon was a beautiful and moving exposition of the 23rd Psalm displaying insights gleaned from a lifetime of meditation on, experience of, and encounter with the Psalm and the Shepherd of which it speaks. On Saturday, November 20, 2010 Lloyd passed through the Valley of the Shadow of Death to the other side of Eternity. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wanda; his sons, Randal and Rodney; his daughter-in-law, Jana; and his grandchildren, Joshua Tyler, Alyssa Dawn and her husband, Ryan Haag. Services will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2010, 2:00 p.m., at San Fernando 1st Church of Christ, 606 Chatsworth Drive, San Fernando CA, 91340.
