County Auditor Don Parker stated the payment was on two of 45 $1,000 bonds of the series issued June 10, 1897, for construction of the old courthouse. The county seven years ago attempted to pay off all the remaining bonds but could not locate the owners of the two paid Tuesday. Sixteen bonds were paid seven years ago. The bonds when issued were made to mature on June 10, 1937. The final bonds were made payable to the National Commercial Bank and Trust Company of Albany, N.Y. Real owners of the final bonds were not known. Actually, the final $1,000 bonds cost the county $3,000 each, as interest at a 5 percent rate had been accruing since issuance. The old courthouse was built in 1898 after a wood structure had burned down. The courthouse built in 1898 was demolished in 1927 because it had become obsolete and was inadequate for the county's needs. The present courthouse was financed by bonds voted on December 15, 1927. The old courthouse bonds, although maturing June 10, 1937, had been callable by the county after June 10, 1907. County officials when the old courthouse was constructed included - Richard Gray, clerk; B.F. Chastain, county judge; E.P. Davenport, treasurer.
