December 03, 1998 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Audrey Lucille Davis, 82, of Odessa died Dec. 2, 1998, in Odessa. She was born Aug. 2, 1916, in Conway Springs, Kan. She married James William Davis July 7, l936, in Newkirk, Okla. They were high school sweethearts and were married 62 years. Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at First Methodist Church in Kaw City, Okla., with the Rev. Troy Pults officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Kaw City, Okla. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Mrs. Davis graduated from Kaw City High School in 1934. She was an Odessa resident for 21 years and was a member of Asbury Methodist Church. Before moving to Odessa she was a resident of Hobbs, N.M., for 17 years where she was very active in her church and women's clubs. She was a loving wife and mother and was dedicated to her family. She also loved her little dog, Gretchen. She was preceded in death by a son, James Edwin Davis in 1939. Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, James (Jim) Davis of Odessa; son and daughter-in-law, Earl L. and Mary Margaret Davis of Odessa; grandson and wife, Jimmie C. and Amy Davis of Edmond, Okla.; granddaughter and husband, Mary Elizabeth and Branson Gatlin of Odessa; great-grandsons, Jimmie Earl Davis and Brandon Gatlin; great-granddaughter, Alicia Gatlin; sister, Frieda Mitchell of Odessa; and nephew, F.R. Mitchell of Odessa. If desired, memorials may be made to Asbury Methodist Church, 4001 E. University Blvd., Odessa, 79762. _________________________________________________________________ Alton Franklin Hines COMANCHE -- Alton Franklin Hines, 72, of Proctor died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born May 2, 1926, in Stamford, the son of Andrew Franklin and Sally Ellen Tabitha Hines. He was a construction superintendent for Dresser Engineering in Odessa until his retirement in 1990. He married Retha Olen Hogan Sept. 9, 1949, in Carbon. He had been a resident of Proctor since 1990 after moving from Odessa. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He is survived by one son, Alton Ray Hines of Iowa Park; six daughters, Juanita Riggs of Odessa, Katharine Hollowell and her husband, George, of Lubbock, Sally Hopkins and her husband, Bill, of Odessa, Martha Johnson of Henderson, Ky., Paula McDaniel and her husband, Wallace, of Clyde and Margaret Vega and her husband, Filiberto, of Goldthwaite; two brothers, C.P. Hines of Winnsboro and Marvin Hines of Garland; four sisters, Frances Burns of Eastland, Ellen Kitchen of Weatherford, Beatrice Mahan of Hasse and Velma Hammer of Abilene. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew Hollowell; and two sons-in-law, Jay Ledbetter and Elmer Riggs Jr. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hall & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Longoria officiating with interment to follow in the Proctor Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Frank Hines Memorial Fund at the First American Bank in Comanche. Lunch for the family will be at noon Saturday at the family reisdence in Proctor. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hall & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are by Hall & Sons Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Graveside services for Coach Mel Howard, 69, of Odessa will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charlie McReynolds officiating. Mr. Howard died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital. He married Opalene Cox July 11, 1970, in El Paso. Mel was born April 28, 1929, in Archer City. He grew up in Muleshoe and graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a bachelor's degree and received his master's degree from Sul Ross State University. He coached several years in towns in the South Plains, El Paso Socorro and West Texas, producing several championship teams and influencing the lives and careers of many young people. Mel was a very caring and loving husband, father and grandfather. His passion was raising, training and racing horses. He very much loved the mountains of Ruidoso, N.M. Survivors include his wife, Opalene Howard of Odessa; daughters, Indi Howard of Odessa, Sherry Roller of Spring, Donna Howard of Lubbock, Jacque Howard of Lubbock, Cindy Cook of Bastrop, Debbie Munda of Dell City; son, Joe Moore of Waxahachie; brother, Thomas Howard of Muleshoe; sisters, Margie Howard and Naomi Owen, both of Muleshoe, and Janelle Singleterry of Elsinore, Calif.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Edna Howard; and brothers, Ray and Loren Howard.
