January 05, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ James Phillip Murray ODESSA -- James Philip (Phil) Murray, 81, of Odessa died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village. He was born Feb. 13, 1917, in Saline County, Ill. He married Anna Reba Huneycutt July 17, 1945, in Cleburne and they moved to Odessa from Illinois in 1952. During World War II, he attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving with the Eighth Air Force in Ipswich, England, as a crew chief on a B-17. He retired after 30 years in 1979 from Phillips Petroleum as a mechanical maintenance foreman. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Odessa Gem & Mineral Society, and the PropBusters Model Airplane Club. Mr. Murray was ordained as a deacon, Oct. 20, 1970. He loved travel, woodworking and lapidary. He was very creative with rocks and loved flying model airplanes with his son. He loved people and was a devoted father to his family. He was preceded in death by his only sister, Helen Murray Jones, in November 1993. Survivors include his wife, Reba Murray of Odessa; daughter, Mary Murray Minton and her husband, Dr. Ellis Minton, of Fort Worth; son, James Philip Murray II and his wife, Lorna Thomas-Murray, of Lindenhurst, Ill. He also is survived by eight grandchildren; Phil Wright, Nancy Diego, Carol Wright, Amy Wickenhauser, Sarah Murray, Elizabeth Christian, Steve Minton and Karl Minton; six great grandchildren; aunt, Genevieve Landrum of Harrisburg, Ill.; and cousin, Knox Murray of Eldorado, Ill. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Dr. W. G. Huneycutt and Rev. Robert Bratcher officiating. Interment services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rosehill Cemetery in Cleburne. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. If desired memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. _________________________________________________________________ Elmer `Dick' Spoon ODESSA -- Services for Elmer "Dick" Spoon, 77, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Rex Clayton officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Spoon died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born March 31, 1921, in Cisco. He married Opal Florence Fenley July 24, 1947, in Odessa. Mr. Spoon moved to Odessa in 1945 from Cisco. He served four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a machinist for Phillips Petroleum Company for 30 years. He was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather to his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Opal Spoon of Odessa; son, Jerry Spoon and his wife, Jeanne, of Arlington; daughter, Dajuana Skidmore of Round Rock; brother, Marvin Spoon and his wife, Pat, of Odessa; sister, Clara Johnston and her husband, Jack, of Odessa; three grandchildren, Brian Spoon and Pamela Spoon of Arlington and Mandy Skidmore of Round Rock.; and many loving and caring nieces and nephews.
