She was born Dec. 12, 1903, in Springfield, Ill., and lived over 40 Years in Southern California. After retirement, she and her husband, Gene Crowley, moved to Odessa in 1965 to be near her sister and family, well-known Odessans, the Louis Klucks. After the deaths of Gene Crowley and Louis "Red" Kluck, Ferne and her sister, Irma Greve Kluck moved to El Paso in 1995 to be near Irma's son, Frederick "Rick" Kluck, chairman of the language department at UTEP. During her years in California, Mrs. Crowley became an accomplished musical composer, having studied with Dr. Leonard Walker, a famous symphony conductor of that time. She composed words and music for five complete shows and dozens of other compositions including suites and numerous settings of biblical quotations. Critics agreed that her forte probably was the art song because that was the perfect vehicle for her poetic thoughts and unusually expressive melodies and harmonies. A ballet suite, "The Elfin Grove," and several of her shows were produced more than once in the Inglewood area, starring young people who were to become Hollywood stars. Friends remember Ferne Crowley as a totally selfless individual, her unique creative talent notwithstanding. Young friends especially appreciated her quiet wisdom and gentle humor. She never sought recognition or even publication of her work, but it was her greatest pleasure to hear them performed well. She is survived by a son, Tommy Gene Crowley of Auburndale, Fla.; two grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; her sister, Irma Greve Kluck of El Paso; many nephews and nieces, including Louis M. Kluck of Houston, Frederick Kluck of El Paso and Victor Kluck of Minneapolis, Minn. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to any Hospice. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 1999 Odessa American. All rights reserved.
