January 25, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Roy Tavarez, 40, of Corpus Christi, a mechanic, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Spohn South Hospital in Corpus Christi. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. David Herrera officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. He was born Jan. 20, 1959, in Odessa, and married Maria Sotelo Oct. 3, 1976, in Odessa. He liked playing tennis and golf and was a boxing coach. Survivors include his wife, Maria Tavarez of Corpus Christi; sons, Tony Tavarez, Roy Tavarez Jr. and Joshua Tavarez, all of Corpus Christi; mother, Tina Tavarez of Odessa; brother, Johnny Tavarez of Odessa; sisters, Lupe Carrasco, Sylvia Ortiz, Eva Tarin and Elva Martinez, all of Odessa; and a grandchild, Marcos Anthony Tavarez. He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Tavarez. _________________________________________________________________ Sue Durham ODESSA -- Graveside services for Winnie "Sue" Durham, 70, of Odessa will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Todd O'Brien officiating. Mrs. Durham died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at her residence. She was born Sept. 27, 1928, in Pampa, Texas. She married W.J. "Bill" Durham on March 31, 1951, in Snyder. He died Dec. 4, 1984. Survivors include her daughter, Kay Durham of Midland; sons, Greg Durham of Odessa, Mark Durham and his wife, Judy, of San Antonio; two grandchildren, Will Durham and Walt Durham, both of San Antonio; and two other special children as part of the family, Leandra Garza of San Antonio and Jake Durham of Odessa. The family asks that memorials be made to Family Hospice. Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Elred P. `Icy' Duke ODESSA -- Services for Elred Pershing Duke, 80, of Odessa are scheduled for 11 a.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Von Dell Drinkard officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Chapel. Mr. Duke died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Seabury Nursing Center. He was born March 23, 1918, in Wood County to Wilmer J. and Mary M. Duke. He married Jessie Lee Dennis on March 30, 1940, in Carbon. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He had worked for and retired from West Texas Vending Co. He moved to Odessa in 1951 from Brownwood. Survivors include his wife, Jessie Duke of Odessa; sons, Bill Duke and wife, Rita, of Odessa and Ronnie Duke of Richardson; daughter, Shirley and Rickey Moore of Odessa; grandchildren, Christopher Duke of Fort Collins, Colo., Christina Duke of Baton Rouge, La., Nathan Duke, Jessica Duke and William Duke, all of Odessa, Ronnie Duke II of Loveland, Colo., Tamra Moore and Tonya Moore, both of Denton; great-grandchildren, Justin Duke and Luanne Duke, both of Fort Collins, Colo. _________________________________________________________________ Maurine DeVazier Rambo ODESSA -- On the 21st day of January, the Lord sent his angel of mercy to pick up Maurine Rambo and deliver her up to the Lord in Heaven to rest in peace and glory forevermore. Born July 2, 1919, to Clarence Richard "Deck" and Birdie Myers Porter in Forrest City, Ark., she attended school in Forrest City. She married Clarence Thomas DeVazier on July 29, 1938, he preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1969. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 531 in Forrest City. In 1984, she moved to Midland, Texas, where she was active at the Senior Citizens Center, where she taught dancing and played in the kitchen band and was on the advisory board. She sang with the Gospel Singers. On March 24, 1991, she married Harry Curtis Rambo and moved to Odessa, where she was a member of the Senior Dance Club and served as their queen in 1993-94. She represented them in the Permian Basin Fair and was chosen Ms. Majestic the same year. She was a member of the 55 Dance Club and the Ballroom Dance Club in Midland. She was a member of the Crescent Park Baptist Church in Odessa. She is survived by her husband, Harry Curtis Rambo of Odessa; two sons, Richard H. DeVazier and Thomas B. DeVazier, both of Arkansas; a brother, C.R. Porter of Killeen, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Charles H. Priddy of Arkansas; three grandchildren; five great-grandsons; and stepchildren, Bernard Rambo of Odessa, Ronald Rambo of Kansas and Paula Rambo of Mesquite, Texas. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Johnny Dickerson, pastor of Crescent Park Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Forrest Park Cemetery, Forrest City, Ark. Arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Crescent Park Baptist Church, 3002 E. University, Odessa, Texas, 79762. _________________________________________________________________ Fred Hoyt Hawley ODESSA -- Services for Fred Hoyt Hawley, 87, of Odessa are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with Lynn Money officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Mr. Hawley died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at his home. He was born Jan. 12, 1912, in Tupelo, Okla., to Elizabeth and Arthur Hawley. He married Lena B. Estep Oct. 8, 1938, in Hobbs, N.M. He was a retired jet engine mechanic from Texas Eastern Pipeline. He was a member of Eisenhower Church of Christ. Survivors include wife, Lena Hawley of Odessa; son, Bentley and Raye Anne Hawley of Odessa; stepson, Dewey and Wanda Alford of Gardendale; granddaughter, Leslie and Mark Wilson of Abilene; sisters, Daisy Blackbird of Oklahoma City, Susie Starnes of Bennington, Okla., and Wanda Montgomery of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brother, Ralph Hawley of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and great-grandchildren, Case, MacKenzi and Landri Wilson of Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy and Arthur Hawley; sisters, Lydia Hawley, Alice Foreman, Nell Crosley, Bess Kroutil and Betty Lee Gibson; and granddaughter, Kelle Jo Hawley.
