January 31, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Mary Chapman DALLAS -- Mary Elaine Chapman, 81, died Saturday, January 30, 1999, at Doctor's Hospital in Dallas. She was born on Oct. 3, 1917, in McCauley, Texas, and was the daughter of Clay and Sophia Wilson. She had been married to Robert Chapman for 49 years when he died in 1997. She lived in Dallas over 50 years and was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Dallas. She was retired from Allied Oil Equipment. Elaine loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of her bridge club for over 30 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers: Ray Wilson, George Wilson and Guy Banks Wilson. She is survived by her sisters, Kathleen Taff of Odessa, Frances Crenshaw of Newnan, Georgia, Nina Jones of Frisco, Betty Smith of Midland, Jo Rita Sweatmon of San Antonio, and Claydene Harman of Euless. She will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Chapel Entombment Hillcrest Mausoleum in Dallas. _________________________________________________________________ Paula Beth Gaulke ODESSA -- Paula Beth Johnson Gaulke, 55, of La Vernia, Texas, passed into the loving hands of her Lord early Friday morning, January 29, 1999, at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. She will lie next to her mother, Hazel Johnson. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in La Vernia, Texas, Monday, February 1, at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church of La Vernia. The daughter of Roy J. Johnson and the late Hazel Johnson of Odessa, Paula Beth graduated from Permian High School with the class of 1962. After graduation from Baylor University with a triple major of Latin, English and Education, she married Grady W. Gaulke, a graduate of the Air Force Academy. Paula Beth leaves behind her husband, Maj. Grady W. Gaulke (ret.) of La Vernia, Texas; her daughter, Mary Christine Gaulke of Kehei, Maui, Hawaii; her son, Capt. Robert L. Gaulke of the U.S. Air Force, his wife Lisa, and their son Seth of Kehei, Maui, Hawaii; her son 2nd Lt. Gary W. Gaulke of the U.S. Air Force, and his wife Kim. Other family members include her father, Roy J. Johnson, and his wife Flo, both of Odessa; her brother, R.Jack Johnson, and his wife Claire, both of Midland; her sister, Doris Nichols, and her husband Wayne, both of Odessa; her brother, Bill M. Johnson, and his wife Carolyn, both of Burnet; her mother-in-law, Mary F. Gaulke of Vero Beach, Florida; her sister-in-law, Joyce Crowley, of Phoenix, Arizona; her sister-in-law, Jamie Bowen-Crowley, and her husband John, both of Westlake Village, California; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. As an Air Force wife, Paula Beth lived in many places and enjoyed every one of them. She was happiest when she was doing things for other people or serving her Lord. She thoroughly enjoyed her work as a real estate agent and as a teacher. A very creative person, she made the flower arrangements for many weddings and cooked for family, friends and church. Her unstinting cheerfulness in the face of adversity enabled many others to shoulder their own burdens more effectively. She will be sorely missed. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Services for Luella Beatrice "Bea" Scott, 79, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Griffin Jones officiating. Mrs. Scott died Friday, January 29, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital after a short illness. She was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Mundell, Ark. She married Andy C. Scott on Oct. 21, 1942, in Berryville, Ark. Mr. Scott died November 21, 1994. Mrs. Scott came to Odessa in 1954. She was a homemaker. She was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church. Survivors include son, Leon Scott and wife, Brenda, of Odessa; son, Randy Scott of Hobbs, N.M.; one brother, Elmo F. Ash and wife, Ruth, of Gateway, Ark.; sisters-in-law, Reba Ash of Odessa, and Norma Ash and Lella Scott, both of Rogers, Ark.; and two grandchildren, Kevin and Tracie Scott, both of Odessa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Bertha Ash; her husband, Andy C. Scott; one grandson, Kraig Scott; and two brothers, Troy and Elmer Ash. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Richard Lee Southerland, 75, of Odessa, a retired oilfield worker, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Avalon Place Nursing Center after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Owen Sharp officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. He was born in Duncan, Oklahoma, on June 23, 1923, and later moved to Olney, Texas, where he spent most of his childhood years. He was a member of the VFW and a Marine Corps. veteran of WWII. He married Hazel C. Smaaladen on March 18, 1944, in Pouslbo, Washington. She preceded him in death in 1991. He is survived by his daughter, Bernadette Oliver, and her husband, Steve, of Odessa; son, Freddie Southerland, and wife, Janis, of Odessa; son, Rodney Southerland, and wife, Glenda, of Greenwood; and son, Danny Southerland, and wife, Janet, of Abilene; two brothers, Charles Raymond Southerland of Park Hill, Okla., and Milton Leroy Southerland of Roswell, N.M.; two sisters, Willie Lee Brooks of Cisco and Lorrene Oka of Corona, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 1999 Odessa American.
