February 12, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Jack Boyd Crawley, 76, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at his residence. Mr. Crawley was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Eastland County and grew up on a farm. He attended Triump Grade School and graduated from Gorman High School in 1941. He attended Southwest Texas State University from 1941 to 1943, when he joined the U. S. Air Force. He served as a First Lieutenant and flew a B-29 in the South Pacific until he was discharged in 1945. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1948 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and received his Master's Degree from the University of Houston in 1950. He coached in Boling I.S.D. from 1948 to 1950, Sweeney I.S.D. from 1950 to 1957 and had a championship basketball team in 1956. In 1957, he moved to Odessa and coached at Ector High School until 1959 when he became the head coach for basketball at Permian High School. He coached and taught Driver's Education until 1965 and taught until 1974 when he became the assistant principal. He retired from Ector County I.S.D. in 1981. He married Helen J. Reid Aug. 26, 1944, in Little Rock, Ark. She preceded him in death Feb. 18, 1995. He is survived by two brothers, C.W. Crawley and Harlen D. Crawley, both of Arlington; and several nieces and nephews. Public visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Hawk and Rev. Dorothy Fowler officiating. A military graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Simpson Cemetery, Kokomo, Texas. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center, 620 N. Alleghaney Ave., Odessa 79761; First United Methodist Church, 415 N. Lee Ave., Odessa, 79761 or your favorite church or charity. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Gertie Lee Helton ODESSA -- Services for Gertie Lee Helton, 91, of Odessa were held Tuesday at Sullivan Funeral Home in Vernon. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery in Vernon. Mrs. Helton died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at Deerings Nursing Home. She was born Feb. 22, 1907, in Silsbey to John Jefferson and Nora J. Harris. Mrs. Helton was married in 1923 to Wesley Smith. He died in 1933. She married William Henry "Happy" Helton in 1936. He died in 1975. She was a member of the Pentecostal faith. "Ma" raised her children and all twelve of her grandchildren, and kept an eye on her 34 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was loved by them all. Her family, nieces and nephews, and friends will miss her, but find comfort in knowing that she is in God's care now. Survivors include, her son, William "Bill" Helton and his wife, Julie, of Quanah; and grandchildren, Barbara Helton, Larry Helton, Rhonda Brewer, Kevin Helton, Beverly Maynard, Gertie White, Dwayne Smith, John O. Smith, Gaye Carroll, Darlene Smith and Donna Clower. Local arrangements are by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Ramon Olivas MIDLAND -- Ramon Olivas, 76, of Odessa, died at an Odessa hospital on Wednesday evening. He was born April 14, 1922, in Cuchillo Parado, Chihuahua, Mexico, where he was raised and educated in San Pedro, Chihuahua. He met and later married Esperanza Garcia April 10, 1948. He moved to Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, where he owned a small supermarket. He was a farmer and rancher who bought and sold cattle all of his life. The couple moved to Odessa in 1981 to be with family. He worked on various ranches in the West Texas area before retiring. He was Catholic. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents, Damaso Olivas and Blasa Lujan, three brothers and six sisters. Survivors include his wife, Esperanza Garcia Olivas of Odessa; son, Jesus Olivas of Odessa; daughters, Consuelo Aranda, Blasa Brown, Maria Thon and Bertha Asdo, all of Midland, Mara Rosario Jurado and Olga Caballero, both of Odessa; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at Reyes-Garcia Chapel and will be conducted by the Guadalupanas of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Our Lady of Guadalupe with the Rev. Jerome Burnett, O.M.I., officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jesus Olivas, Ty Giang, Eladio Aranda, Facundo Caballero, John Asdo and Oracio Jurado. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Reyes-Garcia Funeral Home of Midland. _________________________________________________________________ Geraldine Pinkstaff ODESSA -- Services for Geraldine Pinkstaff, 69, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Mark Woodruff officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Pinkstaff died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born June 5, 1929, in High Island. She married Stanley Pinkstaff April 11, 1947, in Monahans. Mrs. Pinkstaff retired from the water department for the City of Odessa. She was Catholic. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Pinkstaff; daughters, Cheryl Lynn Pinkstaff and Sharron K. Newman; and grandson, Corey Newman. Survivors include her sons, Ronald Pinkstaff of Odessa, John Pinkstaff of Midland and Timothy Pinkstaff of Odessa; daughter, Christy Catanzaro of Denver City; sisters, Dorothy Wein of Odessa, Karen Davis of Round Rock and Nelda Hill of Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Nettie Blake Jones SAN ANGELO -- Nettie Blake Jones died at 4:40 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at a San Angelo nursing home after a lengthy illness. She will be buried in the Odessa Cemetery. No services are planned. She was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Stanton. She was from a pioneer Odessa family and was the daughter of the late Felix and Irene Jones. She graduated from Odessa High School and North Texas State University at Denton. She taught school in Odessa and at Georgia State College for Women. She also worked at West Texas Rehabilitation in Odessa. Blake served in World War II as a captain in the U.S. Army Women's Special Medical Corps. She was present when Japan surrendered to the U.S. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Jones, and a sister, Geneva Defee.
