February 20, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Services for Linda Jeanette Athey, 45, of Odessa will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Warren officiating. Mrs. Athey died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Memorial Hospital & Medical Center in Midland. She was born Feb. 27, 1953, in Odessa. She married Mike Athey July 22, 1972, in Hobbs, N.M. Mrs. Athey moved to Odessa in 1982 from New Orleans. She was a member of the Christian Women's Association, a member of Mission Dorado Women's Association, the Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary and First Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Mike Athey of Odessa; daughters, Becky Athey of Wichita Falls, Susan Athey of Odessa; father and stepmother, J.F. and Eva McDonald of Hobbs, N.M.; brothers, James McDonald of Summerset, Calif., Charles McDonald of Las Vegas and Jerry McDonald of Dallas. The family suggests memorial to American Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Calvin "Cal" Chappell MCCAMEY -- Calvin Clyde "Cal" Chappell, 73, of McCamey died on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Odessa Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Murray Sauders officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion in the Resthaven Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of McCamey. Mr. Chappell was born on March 14, 1925, in Livingston County, Ken. He was a Baptist, and a member of the American Legion. He was a longtime resident of Girvin and McCamey. He was an oilfield worker and owner and operator of Girvin Transports. He also served in the Navy from 1941 until 1945. Survivors include his wife, Jewel Chappell of McCamey; a stepson, Charles Mabry of McCamey; and a stepdaughter, Sharon Prophet of Odessa; two brothers, William "Chick" Chappell of Douglas, Ariz., and Bill Chappell of Brady; seven stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be stepgrandson and stepgreat-grandsons, Jimmy Delaney, Billy Thigpen, Brad Thigpen, Jeremy Fisher, Bryan Fisher, Greg Mabry, Steven Mabry and Jason Mabry. _________________________________________________________________ O.E. Cross ODESSA -- Graveside services for O.E. Cross, 87, of Odessa will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Cross died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Feb. 13, 1912, in Jack County. He married Geraldine Dickey Dec. 25, 1934. Mr. Cross was a driller in the oilfield and a school crossing guard. He was a member of the Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Cross of Odessa; sons, Gary Cross of Odessa, Tommy Cross of St. Louis, Mo., and Danny Cross of Arlington; sister, Laura Spray of Aspermont; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Ruth Farrar Hudgens, 83, of Odessa passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital after a short illness. She was born June 7, 1915, in Van Zant County to Jim Farrar and Ester McKibbin Farrar. She married Jack E. Hudgens Dec. 8, 1931, in Davidson, Okla. Mrs. Hudgens was a homemaker and a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hudgens, son, Elwin Lavon Hudgens and great-grandson, Alex Hudgens. Mrs. Hudgens is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Uldene and Calvin Davis of Odessa, Martralle and Harvey Morton of Jacksonville, Texas, Glenda and Budd Fountain of Langdon, Kan., and Tawana and Billy Ross Williams of Odessa; son and daughter-in-law, Doyle and Johnnie Hudgens of Borger; sister, Billie Jean Renefro; brothers, Paul Farrar and Eulice Farrar; daughter-in-law, Sammie Hudgens of Sacramento, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Revs. A.D. Kyle and Morgan Bush officiating. Graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. The family will receive visitors from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Mrs. Hudgens' grandsons will serve as pallbearers. _________________________________________________________________ Wanda Porter MIDLAND -- Wanda Allyne Porter was born Sept. 24, 1935, in Pecos to Enos James and Minnie Lulu (Thacker) Shepard. She was reared in Artesia, N.M., and married Garland Porter there in 1960. They have lived in Midland since 1986. She raised three beautiful children and made lifelong friends everywhere that her journey through life and love took her. She devoted her life to caring for those she loved and leaves a great void in the lives of those she leaves behind. The most important parts of her life were the people who loved her most: her soul mate and devoted husband, her loving children, grandchildren, sisters, family, and friends. Wanda, We will miss your wonderful cooking, your valuable advice, your gentle touch, and most of all, your beautiful smile. Mrs. Porter is survived by her husband, Garland L. Porter of Midland; her son, David Porter of Houston; her daughters, Mindy Porter of Austin and Margo Volkmer and husband, Erik, of League City; her sisters, Faith Kennedy and husband, Kent, of Odessa and Velda Gass and husband, Leon, of Odessa; and two grandchildren, Jeremy Tipton and Cameron Tipton. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Frasier officiating. Ellis Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Twin Oaks Memorial Park in Artesia, N.M., with the Rev. Walt Isaac officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Kennedy, Rick Kennedy, James Kennedy, Jason Gass, Barry Norris and Jimmy Davis.
