Born in San Angelo, Texas, December 27, 1934, Mr. White spent his early childhood years in that city. His family moved to GrandfalIs, Texas in 1937 and, in 1947, to Odessa, where he completed his high school education. His college years were interrupted by a two-year tour of duty (1954-56) in the U. S. Army. He was on the cutting edge of the NIKE Missile Program, receiving his initial training at White Sands, New Mexico, and serving in the 513th AAA NIKE Missile Battalion which pioneered the missile bases on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State. Upon completion of his military service Mr. White met his future wife, Dorothy Marie Grogan, when he was best man for the wedding of her brother, Harold Grogan, with whom he had served in the Army. They were married the following year on August 17, 1957, in Kansas City, Kansas. Mr. White then resumed his college studies, enrolling at North Texas State College. He graduated in 1959, earning a B.B.A. degree with honors and also becoming the first recipient of the N.T.S.C. award for the "Outstanding Student in Insurance." Following his graduation Mr. White realized a long-held dream when he joined his parents, Charles D. and Marion G. White, in the family business, the White Insurance Agency. He became co-owner and later sole owner of the business upon the deaths of his parents, remaining in the latter capacity until his failing health made this no longer possible. He was a valued member of the Melton Insurance Agency in his final working years. During his 43 years in the insurance business, Mr. White gained widespread respect for his professional knowledge and personal integrity. He was elected President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Odessa and was twice selected "Boss of the Year" by the Insurance Women of Odessa. Mr. White was actively involved in many civic and community organizations, including the Odessa Jaycees, Odessa Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, and Ector County Republican Party. He was a treasurer of the Ector County Republican Party and delegate to State Republican Conventions. His deep religious faith was a guiding influence throughout Mr. White's life. He became a member of the Methodist Church as a young boy and constantly sought to live as a true Christian witness. He was a charter member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and was on the Administrative Board of the Church and the Staff Parish Relations Committee. He was also active in youth activities and was a member of the church choir. He spoke of two of his most treasured experiences as being his work as Director of Music at Asbury and his recent "Walk to Emmaus" and subsequent membership in the Emmaus Community. Music was always an important part of his life. His love for, and talent in, a wide variety of musical expression was first seen when, as a three-year-old, he joined with his mother and two sisters in singing three- and four-part rounds. In later years he learned to play the French horn, piano, and guitar. In addition to participation in his church choir, he was an enthusiastic member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. No remembrance of Mr. White would be complete without a recognition of the boundless love which existed between him and his family. He leaves for them a boundless love which existed between him and his family. He leaves for them a precious legacy in memories of his generous heart, his strong sense of right and wrong, his gentle wisdom, and his incredible courage and grace in meeting life's challenges. Mr. White is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters and their husbands, Tammy and Kent Stallcup and Liz and Jeff Huckabee; granddaughters, Holly and Amanda Stallcup and Alexis Huckabee; grandson, Richmond Schuyler Stallcup; sisters, Marion Crume and Nancy Curry and her husband, Bud; brother, David White and his wife, Gretchen; uncles, Jack Gingrich and John S. White; nephews, Christopher Crume and David, Paul, and Mark White; great-nephew, Ty White; brother-in-law, Harold Grogan and his wife Leta; and cousins and their spouses, Mary and Ed Kuhn, Bill Walker, Helen and Howard Raeke; Mona and Leslie Leaton, Emory and Pat White, Mark and Patsy White, and Paul and Meg Gingrich. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Ted White Memorial Fund, Asbury United Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements are by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 1999 Odessa American. All rights reserved.
