March 11, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Dan Curb Jr., 79, of Odessa, passed away March 10, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born July 20, 1919, in Woodward, Okla., the youngest child of the Rev. Dan and Mary Etta Curb, who was a pioneer Baptist preacher inducted into the Oklahoma Baptist Hall of Fame. He moved around a lot as a young child, graduated from Shawnee High School, Shawnee, Okla., and attended Cameron Junior College at Lawton, Okla., where he met and married Helen Marie Loper on Dec. 12, 1942, in Oklahoma City. He attended Draughan's Business College in Oklahoma City. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the "Railsplitter" 84th Infantry Division in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg and Germany. He was wounded on Christmas Day, 1944, in Belgium. He attained the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and Combat Infantry Badges. He went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Oklahoma City in 1947, transferred to Houston, where he lived 13 years, then to Bartlesville, Okla., and moved to Odessa in 1964, where he retired from Phillips after 37 years. He was an active and devoted member of Crescent Park Baptist Church, where he supported all activities and served in several positions until his health would not permit. He was a Mason for over 50 years, an Endowed and Life member of H.A. McFarland Masonic Lodge No. 1338 in Odessa, a Past Master and served as Secretary of the Lodge for 21 years, was awarded the Golden Trowel Award for long and exceptional service, a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, member of El Paso Consistory of the Scottish Rite Bodies, served on Board of Directors for Odessa Scottish Rite Association, member of York Rite bodies, Odessa Commandery No. 110, Sam J. Helm Chapter No. 445, RAM Council No. 363, R & SM, Past Patron of Friendship Chapter No. 1008, Order of the Eastern Star, served on the Advisory Board of Order of Rainbow for Girls 10 years and a recipient of the Grand Cross of Colors. He was demitted member of El Maida Shrine and member of the American Legion Earl S. Bailey Post No. 430. Mr. Curb served on credit union committees and did lots of other volunteer work in the community. Being an adoptive father, he had compassion for abused, abandoned or orphaned children and earned the honorary title of "Grand-Paw-Pa." Mr. Curb was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dr. Delos Curb and the Rev. Charles Curb; sister, Velma Matthews; one grandson and one granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Helen Curb of Odessa; and a daughter, Bonita Ruth German of El Paso; grandchildren, Jenifer Lynn Dunlap Karaffa who is married to Dustin Karaffa and resides in Taylorville III., Julia Anne Dunlap Cavender, who lived in the home for six years and graduated from Permian High School before marrying James Cavender of Odessa, Joshua Daniel Storts, a student at Hanks High School, and Macky Storts, a student at Edgemere Elementary, both of El Paso. He also has two great-granddaughters, Charolette Alexandra and Demitria Layne; sister, Elizabeth Read of Spring; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Interment with Masonic rites will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Family Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Services were held Sunday, March 7, 1999, at First United Methodist Church in Cisco with the Rev. Gary Turner officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home. Mrs. Hailey was born on May 30, 1904, to Samuel and Margaret Whisenant in Lampasas County, Texas. She was one of six children. She married Clyde E. Hailey on July 18, 1923, in Mangum, Texas. They moved from Red Springs, Texas, to Cisco in 1930. She was a resident of Cisco for 68 years. They were members of First United Methodist Church in Cisco. She was primarily a loving homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her husband preceded her in death in 1958. After her husband's death, she worked at C and B Clinic as a receptionist for many years. Survivors include four daughters, Margaret King of Cisco, Billie Tatom of Hilltop Lakes, Texas, Wanda Gray of Odessa and Kay Cockerell of Abilene; 12 grandchildren including Sharon Temple of Midland, Kathy Roberts and Danny Gray Jr., both of Odessa; 21 great-grandchildren including Kristina, Veann and Erin Temple of Midland, Autumn, Brittany, Charles Roberts III and Daniel, Megan, and Allison Gray, all of Odessa; many nieces and nephews; and one sister, Goldie Slaughter of Cisco. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Cisco, or a charity of choice. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Raymond Travis Jenkins, 54, of Odessa, died March 10, 1999, at his residence. He was born July 13, 1944, in Stamford to Luther and Jimmie Jenkins. He married Bobble Teague Shults July 13, 1984, in Odessa. Mr. Jenkins moved to Odessa in 1975 from Stamford. He was a master plumber, a member of the American Legion and Zion Fellowship. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jenkins of Odessa; daughter, Jenna Newport of Telferner; stepson, Jeff Shults of Odessa; stepdaughter, Janice Amos of Odessa; sister, Gay N "Sue" Smith of Rule; brothers, Jack T. Jenkins of Lewisville, Ronnie D. Jenkins of Rule and Ray N. Jenkins of Fort Worth; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Luther Taylor Jenkins; mother, Jimmie Geneva Liles; and stepson, Jason Shults. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Dewey Blevins officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Mitchell, 98, of Odessa will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater St. John's Baptist Church with the Rev. Norris Harris officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Martinez Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Bobby Harris, C.L. Harris, Clois Harris, Vaness Patterson, Johnny Patterson and Marshall Harris. Mrs. Mitchell died Monday, March 8, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Nov. 15, 1900, in Rosebud and moved to Odessa eight years ago from Stamford. She was a homemaker and enjoyed fishing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bird Mitchell; and her parents, Gus Turner and Levada White. Survivors include a son, Bobby Griffin of Fort Worth; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.
