Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Leslie died Monday, March 29, 1999, at his residence. He was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Carthage. He married Cornell Minter Dec. 30, 1932, in Carthage. Mr. Leslie worked for various engineering and construction firms, constructing compressor stations, gasoline plants, chemical plants and refineries. He worked in the rigging and heavy equipment departments. Today, we have monstrous cranes to erect gigantic complexes to process oil products and lift huge vessels. During the 1950s, when the complex south of town, known then as El Paso Products Plant, was being constructed, no such equipment existed. In those days, John was well known as a "super rigger." All tall vessels and heavy equipment were set with poles. This extremely hazardous and dangerous work required a person who was highly skilled with nerves of steel. John was such a man and will be remembered as one of Odessa's pioneers who helped to bridge the past to the future. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola Alice and John Malcom Leslie; two brothers, Dawson and Owen Leslie; and a sister, Hazel Capps. Survivors include his wife, Cornell Leslie of Odessa; sons, Jay M. Leslie of Odessa and John T. Leslie of Longview; daughter, Patsy R. ALbertson of Jal, N.M.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 1999 Odessa American. All rights reserved.
