April 06, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Andrew Bailey Hinton of Odessa passed away on Resurrection Sunday, April 4, 1999, in Odessa. He was born June 18, 1915, in Valley Mills, the son of Prudie Loper and Luke Hinton. Bailey married Sylvia Bea Baggett in San Antonio June 20, 1942. Bailey is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Odessa; children, Sharron McClellan and husband, Michael, of Abilene, Allan Blake Hinton and wife, Deborah, of Odessa and Muriel Parker and husband, Ray, of Pflugerville; and a sister, Helen Simmonds of Austin. Surviving grandchildren are Eric McClellan, Brandon McClellan and Rachel McClellan, all of Abilene, James and Kristin McClellan Ashby of Garland, Michael Pineda of Denton, Ron Pineda of Miami Beach, Fla., Bobby and Margo Hinton Rodriguez of Fort Worth, Cliff and Cynthia Hinton Self of Odessa, Paul and Stephanie Hinton Caudillo of Norman, Okla., Autumn Hinton, Wesley and Alana Hinton Word, Allan Blake Hinton II, and Sloan Hinton of Odessa, Nathan and Nicole Parker Lino of Wake Forest, N.C., and Andrew Parker and Derek Parker of Pflugerville. Great-grandchildren are Megan and Colton Pineda, Spencer, Chandler and Skyler Self, Zachary and Hunter Cauditto, Devon Hinton and Dylan and Katelin Word. He also had many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Edith Blount; and great-grandson, Austin Caudillo. Bailey graduated from Eastland High School in 1935 and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He received the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After moving his family to Odessa in 1951, he worked in concrete finishing and retired from the oil field service business. He was a charter member of Second Baptist Church. Bailey, known as "Bobo" to his grandchildren, loved to fish, work crossword puzzles and talk. His family will have many stories to remember him by. Thanks to Charlotte Bridges and the Rev. Jimmy Braswell of Home Hospice, and Bill Farmer who visited with him. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will be available for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA --Services for John Mastin, 78, are scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Philip Mclarty officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Pete English, Wayne Matney, Jack Walker, Buddy Rogers, Charles Chambers and Jody Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be Emil Beck, Gene Hurt and Dr. A.B. Finch. Dortha Bennett, soloist, and Sharlis Andrews, pianist, will perform during the service. Visitation will follow the memorial service. Mr. Mastin came to Odessa in 1949 from Montgomery, Ala. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years. He was past president of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and he served on the committee that created Odessa's famous landmark, John Ben Rabbit, a fiberglass jack rabbit that stands seven feet high. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corp. Mr. Mastin was the regional director for Franklins Women's Wear for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Mastin, in 1986. Mr. Mastin married Mary Gray on Oct. 15, 1994. He is survived by his wife, Mary Mastin; son and daughter-in-law, John N. and Glenda Mastin of San Antonio, Texas; and grandchildren, Courtney Mastin and Christopher Mastin, both of San Antonio, Texas; niece, Jackie Gentry of Rowlett, Texas; sister-in-law, Dorothy M. Dearment of Garland, Texas; stepsons, Jerry Cooper of Plano, Texas and Mike Cooper of New York, N.Y. McNaul, 90, passed away April 1, 1999 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at Kaseman Presby-terian Hospital. She was born in Quitman, Texas, and graduated from college in Denton. She was a longtime resident of Odessa but had recently and reluctantly moved to Albuquerque. She married Hugh McNaul in 1940. The couple lived for two years in Oswego, New York, where Hugh's work took them during World War II. Upon returning to Odessa, Cleo operated a private kindergarten for three years. She taught elementary school for thirty-five years and was at Austin Elementary School for most of that time. After her retirement, she volunteered at Meals on Wheels and Hospice. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for more than fifty years. Cleo treasured her many friends and family. She traveled frequently to visit her daughters and their families. She is survived by daughters: Anna Martinez and husband Larry of Albany, CA; Martha McNaul and husband Douglas Cutler of Albuquerque, NM; Sally Goss and husband Glenn of Kingwood, TX; four grandchildren: Susan and Stacey Tate, Kyle and Cara Goss: great-granddaughter Jana Tate and brother Ed Smart of Tuscaloosa, AL. She is preceded in death by her husband Hugh McNaul and grandson Steven Tate. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 1401 N. Sam Houston, on Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Odessa Family Hospice, 618 North Golder, Odessa, TX 79761 or a charity of your choice. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- On Easter, Reba Mae McAdoo Smith walked into the light of her Lord. Born January 14, 1906, in Commanche County to Jessie Olen and Lillie Rivers McAdoo, she married her pastor, Reuben Daniel Smith, in June of 1926 in Fort Stockton. They moved to Odessa in 1955, where she taught at Dowling Elementary until she retired in 1975. For several more years, she taught at Sherwood Christian School. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She loved God and her church family and her many friends. She loved teaching, singing and light. Her llfe was lived as a praise to God. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 1999, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn June Smith of Odessa; her niece, Janiece Butler Hammond and husband, Edward; her nephews, Charles McAdoo and wife, Ruth, and Patrick Lee McAdoo and wife, Carolyn; and many great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the many friends who loved her; and helped her during her last years. No one who knew her will forget her joy in simple things, her friendliness and her caring. The essence of her life was joy and song. Now, Mother you can sing again, forever. _________________________________________________________________ Shirley Thornton-Mathis HAMILTON -- Shirley Thornton-Mathis, 63, of Graham died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Graham General Hospital. A graveside funeral is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Gregory Renz, pastor of Morningside Baptist Church in Graham, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home. Mrs. Mathis was born July 11, 1935, in Evergreen to the late Layton Walton and Ruby Ammons (Sellers) Nix. She received her bachelor of science degree from Hardin-Simmons University and a master's degree in education from Tarleton State University. She was a retired school teacher and a Baptist. She married Kenneth Gene Mathis Nov. 23, 1989, in Odessa. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Nix; and twin boys, Matthew Dale and John Mark Thornton. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Gene Mathis of Graham; daughters, Leslie Elian and her husband, Frank, of Los Angeles and Nicole Sayre of Swan Lake, Mont.; two stepdaughters, Tammy Chambers and her husband, Randy, of Odessa and Alisha Arnsmeyer and her husband, Andy, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; stepson, Richard Mathis and his wife, Beth, of Odessa; brother, Curtis Nix of Andrews; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. _________________________________________________________________ Louise Line ODESSA -- Services for Louise Line, 86, of Odessa were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hawk officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Line died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Seabury Nursing Home. She was born June 19, 1912, in Gordon. Mrs. Line was a longtime resident of Odessa. She attended Texas Tech University where she received a B.S. in education in 1937. She moved to Odessa and married Wilbur on June 14, 1947. Louise taught in the Ector County school system for 24 years, retiring in June of 1976. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the Couples Sunday School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Line. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Edwards of Arlington; nephews, Charles Edwards of Houston and Don Edwards of Springfield, Va.; and niece, Barbara Edwards of Austin.
