April 30, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Giles "Rodney" McAdams of Odessa died peacefully on April 28, 1999, at his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Rod McAdams was born Sept. 29, 1943, in Crane. He was born to G.C. and Elma McAdams, longtime residents of the Permian Basin. Rod graduated from Odessa High School in 1961. He then graduated from Texas Tech as a finance major in 1966. He was a member of the Odessa Jaycees from 1968 to 1974. He held the office of vice president for two years and was also a director for two years. Rod was president of the Girls Softball Association. He was also appointed to the Mayor's Drug Abuse Commission. Rod was voted outstanding young man of the year in 1972. Rod and Gerri Lu were married on June 21, 1980, in Odessa. They have two daughters, Tana McAdams Malis of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michele Boggs Barrow of Midland. Mr. McAdams and his wife were members of St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He loved deer and elk hunting with his friends, bird hunting with his wife and raising quarter horses. Rod was a vice president with Merrill Lynch in Odessa. He retired in February 1998 to concentrate his efforts in his treatments for cancer. Mr. McAdams is survived by his wife, Gerri Lu McAdams; his daughters, Tana McAdams Malis and her husband, Paul of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michele Boggs Barrow and her husband, Brandon, of Midland; his parents, G.C. and Elma McAdams of Odessa: his mother-in-law, Donna King; brother-in-law, Don King; sisters-in-law, Kelly Whitaker and her husband, Danny, and Traci Clark and her husband, Bill, all of Odessa; five nieces; five nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, cousins and dear friends. Mr. McAdams was preceded in death by his brother, Charles McAdams. Funeral services will be Friday, April 30, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1415 N. Grandview, with the Rev. Dr. Craig Martindale and friend Kerry Peacock officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. If desired, memorials can be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Vista Family Hospice and the American Cancer Society of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Stephen Sorrells Chesney, 17, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born April 30, 1981, in Andrews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. J.D. O'Neal officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Stephen was a member of the youth group at Odessa Bible Church. He attended Permian High School. He loved cars, bowling and going to the mall. He also loved computers and chatting on the Internet. Stephen is survived by: his mother and step-father, Vickie and Billie Rose of Odessa; his father, Robert Chesney Sr., of Broken Bow, Okla.; grandparents, Kenneth and Patricia Lane of Odessa, Joyce Hix of Apache, Okla., Glade Chesney of Cache, Okla., Maxine Page of Odessa; four brothers, Jimmy SorrelIs of Odessa, Michael SorrelIs of Ennis, Robert Chesney Jr. of Broken Bow, Okla., Chaz Chesney of Broken Bow, Okla.; four uncles, Tony Chesney, Steve Chesney, Jeff Lane and Kenny Lane, all of Odessa; four aunts, Terry Wilcox of Apache, Okla., DeeAnn Whitehead of Apache, Okla., Wendy Alexander of Kenner, La., and Rhonda Harris of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Services for Elzee Thompson, 79, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mackey Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Johann Neethling officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Thompson was born on Dec. 12, 1919, to Mr. and Mrs. John Thompson, both of whom are deceased, in Brandon, Miss. His schooling was at Pearlie Groove High School in Brandon, Miss. He attained an associate's degree from the University of Maryland and completed courses of study at Odessa College. He united with Pearlie Groove Baptist Church at an early age and was a faithful member until he joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Brown on Nov. 8, 1938, who preceded him in death. To that union was born one son, Keith Roudolph Thompson I. He was a loving surrogate father to his young sister, Barbara N. Guimont, and surrogate grandfather to her children Roger Guimont, Darryl Guimont and Stephan Guimont, as well as surrogate great-grandfather to Shree Guimont. Mr. Thompson served 30 years in the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer three years before his retirement in 1974. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. After settling in Odessa, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson united with Mackey Chapel United Methodist Church under the pastorage of the Rev. M.C. Stone. There they became actively involved in every aspect of the church. Mr. Thompson was also employed at Medical Center Hospital as executive chef until his second retirement in 1989. He was an active member of the Ector Lions Club, the American Legion and V.F.W. Post 4372 until his health failed. Among his survivors are his son, Keith Thompson I, and his wife, Joyce, of Odessa; one granddaughter, Phyllis Deneene Thompson of Fort Worth; one grandson, Keith Thompson II and his wife, Victoria, of Midland; one great-grandson, Keith Thompson III of Midland; five brothers, Eddie Mack Thompson of Seattle, John C. Thompson of Lawton, Okla., Lenon Thompson of Bellville, Mich., Billie Z. Thompson, of Brandon, Miss., Charles Thompson of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Ella Harvey and her husband, Boss, of Spokane, Wash., and Barbara Guimont of DeSoto; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; and a loving church of family and friends.
