May 03, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Roy Karr Jr., 81, of Odessa, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at his residence. He was born Aug. 2, 1917, in Muskogee, OK., to Roy and Sally Lucille Karr Sr. He married Nancy Howard July 13, 1996, in Odessa. Mr. Karr moved to Odessa in 1941 from Muskogee, OK., and was a graduate of O.S.U. with a degree in accounting. He was a past president of Kalpa Alpha Fraternity, a deacon of First Baptist Church and was a golfer at Odessa Country Club. He owned RFK, Inc. and was an avid supporter of Baylor University. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Karr, Jan. 16, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Karr of Odessa; sons; Roy Karr lII (Sonny) and wife, Janet of Odessa, James Richard Karr and Colette of Waco; grandchildren, Roy Franklin Karr IV and wife, Sarah, Katherine Cox and husband, Kevin, Mary Frances Karr, Angelia Karr and Rachael Karr; great grandchildren, Franklin Karr, Michael Karr and Jackson Cox; and one nephew Kenny Karr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 3, 1999, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley, Dr. John Rasco and Curtis Brewer officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. If desired, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Ministries. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Giles "Rodney" McAdams of Odessa died peacefully on April 28, 1999, at his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Rod McAdams was born Sept. 29, 1943, in Crane. He was born to G.C. and Elma McAdams, longtime residents of the Permian Basin. Rod graduated from Odessa High School in 1961. He then graduated from Texas Tech as a finance major in 1966. He was a member of the Odessa Jaycees from 1968 to 1974. He held the office of vice president for two years and was also a director for two years. Rod was president of the Girls Softball Association. He was also appointed to the Mayor's Drug Abuse Commission. Rod was voted outstanding young man of the year in 1972. Rod and Gerri Lu were married on June 21, 1980, in Odessa. They have two daughters, Tana McAdams Malis of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michele Boggs Barrow of Midland. Mr. McAdams and his wife were members of St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He loved deer and elk hunting with his friends, bird hunting with his wife and raising quarter horses. Rod was a vice president with Merrill Lynch in Odessa. He retired in February 1998 to concentrate his efforts in his treatments for cancer. Mr. McAdams is survived by his wife, Gerri Lu McAdams; his daughters, Tana McAdams Malis and her husband, Paul, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michele Boggs Barrow and her husband, Brandon, of Midland; his parents, G.C. and Elma McAdams of Odessa: his mother-in-law, Donna King; brother-in-law, Don King; sisters-in-law, Kelly Whitaker and her husband, Danny and Traci Clark and her husband, Bill, all of Odessa. Five nieces, five nephews, many great nieces and nephews, aunts, cousins and dear friends. Mr. McAdams was preceded in death by his brother, Charles McAdams. Funeral services were Friday, April 30, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1415 N. Grandview with the Rev. Dr. Craig Martindale and friend Kerry Peacock officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. If desired, memorials can be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Vista Family Hospice and the American Cancer Society of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Lt. John F. McAhon passed from this earth Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital from natural causes. Lt. McAhon was survived by his mother, Mrs. Jean McAhon in Las Cruces, N.M.; Catherine, his wife of 25 years; and two children, Maureen Rabon of Brownwood and Sean McAhon of Odessa. Lt. McAhon was employed by the Las Cruces Police Department from 1968 to 1976, when his family moved to West Texas. He worked for the Crane Police Department for two years. He has been a member of the Odessa Police Department for 16 years. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February and watch commander on Patrol Shift B. As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 22 years of sobriety, he was considered a hero to many people who shared the same disease as he did. He was elected board member of Clover House as a result of his experiences with AA. Lt. McAhon was awarded his Eagle Scout in Germany, in the TRANSATLANTIC Council. He was an active member of the Buffalo Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of Troop 74 in Odessa. Lt. McAhon was a Vigil Honors recipient in January 1998. His Vigil Honor name was Southwind. He was the Order of the Arrow, TATONKA Lodge, Chapter Advisor. Lt. McAhon had many interests in his life, including memberships in National Automatic Pistol Collectors Association and Texas Muzzle Loaders Association. He was an active member of the Light Infantry and a Colonel in the Texas Army, Andrews Branch. Lt. McAhon was Lay Eucharistic Minister with St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He also was a member of the West Texas Amateur Radio Club; his Amateur Radio call sign was KC5PAW. During his life, Lt. McAhon achieved the rank of First degree Black Belt in Tukong Moosul. He loved the theater and loved entertaining audiences in the Globe Theater. His leading role plays included, "Blue Bonnet Flour Radio Hour," "The Mikado," and "The Man of La Mancha." Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 4141 N. Tanglewood Ave, in Odessa. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall with the family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the St. Barnabas building or Boy Scouts of America. Arrangements by Frank W.
