Esther was born Sept. 13, 1910, at Camp San Saba, McCulloch County, where her parents, Ernest and Nellie Kothmann Leifeste were living on a ranch owned by her grandparents. In 1912, her parents moved to their farm near Fly Gap, where she learned English while first attending school at Fly Gap. As the "middle" child of nine brothers and sisters, she experienced all the adversities of having four older brothers and sisters and all the responsibilities of being the oldest of four younger siblings. The family moved to Mason about 1924 to facilitate school attendance and Esther graduated from Mason High School in 1928. After graduation, she moved to San Antonio and began training at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital where she graduated in 1931 and was certified as a Registered Nurse. She met her future husband, Harvey J. Turner, and they became engaged on July 4, 1934, and were married on April 21, 1935, in their pastor's home. Her two sons, Harvey Jr. and David, were born on June 28, 1941, and February 13, 1945, in San Antonio. Both of her sons earned graduate degrees from the University of Texas. Harvey was successful in the construction business in San Antonio while David became a DDS specializing in orthodontics. Harvey, Sr. passed away in February 1992, and Harvey Jr. passed away in April 1995.
