CRANE -- Mildred Elizabeth Stavley Chandler of Terrell County died July 1, 1999, in Crane. She was Baptist. A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. today at Richard W. Box Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be at Chandler Ranch with the Rev. James Medley of the First Baptist Church of Rankin officiating. Pallbearers will be Joe A. Chandler, Mike Hill, R.E. Mason, Charles Stavley, James McDonald and Cole Jennings. Honorary pallbearers are C.R. Rylander, Olin Smith, Bill Casstevens, Kenneth Casstevens, Scott Doyle, Joe Allen, Charley Don Caron, Jeff Rowes and Harry Holmes. Mildred was born March 21, 1919, to Charles Franklin and Lena Schraffl Stavley in Juno, Texas, where her German grandparents settled early in the century. Her parents ranched in the Juno area and owned the store, post office and livery stable there until their move to the Stavley Ranch north of Dryden when Mildred was a school girl. Mildred married Joe Bailey Chandler, also of Terrell County, in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1992. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her sister, Bertha Mansfield, and her brothers, Howard, Bill and Frank Stavley. Mildred is survived by two daughters, Charlena Vargas-Prada of Iraan and JoBeth Holub of Dryden; by the fathers of her grandchildren, Augusto Vargas-Prada of Lima, Peru, and E. J. Holub of Midland; and by her grandchildren, Jana Hill and her husband, Mike, of Sanderson, JoeIl Doyle and her husband, Scott, of Tulia, Joe Austin Chandler and his wife, Nan, of Katy and Anne Vargas-Prada of Boston, Mass; six great-grandchildren, Lena, Chandler, Harleigh, Hayden, Rose Hill and Sutton Swinburn; one sister, Mae Mason of Crane; one brother and sister-in-law, Ross and Pelham Rose Stavley of Sanderson; and sisters-in-law, Elsie Stavley, Myrtle Malone and Lillie Chandler. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and friends. Special friends were all the staff at the Crane County Care Center, Lisa Gibson of Iraan and Susana Falcon of McCamey, whose kindness will always be cherished by Mildred's family. Mildred's quick wit and unfailing sense of humor in all situations will be remembered as well as her unlimited repertoire of jokes. She loved to laugh and easily inspired those around her to join in. She was hostess and friend to everyone who went to the ranch during the 40 years. She and Joe operated a fishing camp and golf course on the Pecos River and independence Creek, a place that became a second home for many. "Mildred, these people aren't coming to see us," Joe often reminded her, but she knew they were. Golf was her favorite sport, but she was also the reigning champion of table tennis, where she was rarely defeated. An enthusiastic hunter, she once ran out of ammunition and, after a lively struggle, killed a wounded white-tailed buck with a butcher knife. She and her sister-in-law Myrtle Chandler covered many miles on foot as they explored area ranches for purple bottles and arrowheads. Mildred spoke Spanish fluently and trips to Mexico and South America delighted her. She was chosen room mother by both her daughters' graduation classes in Iraan and sponsored senior trips to Mexico City and New Orleans. She was an avid reader and worked crossword puzzles constantly. Other interests were television, needlepoint and gambling. Poker games at the ranch and betting on horse races were pastimes for her and she faithfully played the lottery each week, sure that she'd win big someday. A friend described Mildred with this quote from poet Thomas Gray: "Full many a flower was born to blush unseen and waste its sweetness on the desert air." She was, to her family and friends, truly a flower in the desert air and her sweetness was not wasted. Her merry heart, kind and generous nature, and unique personality will be missed by those of us who are left behind. _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Emigido Huerque "Mickey" Jimenez, 67, of Odessa, died Friday, July 2, 1999, at his residence.
