July 07, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ June McClane Campbell ODESSA -- June McClane Campbell, 71, of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Antioch Christian Church with the Rev. Don Fankhauser officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born June 1, 1928, in Mart. She married Paul Campbell Dec. 7, 1998, in Odessa. Mrs. Campbell was a member of Antioch Christian Church. She was also a member of Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, Paul Campbell of Odessa; sons, James Martin Williams and David Leo Williams; and many other friends and relatives. The family suggests memorials to Antioch Christian Church to the June McClane Campbell Fund. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Juan Nabarette Mata, 61, of Odessa, died Monday, July 5, 1999, in Odessa. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. He was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Alpine. Survivors include his son, Joel Ortiz Mata of Ohio; brothers, Julio N. Mata of Odessa and Jose Mata of Seminole; and sisters, Rosa Mata Chavez and Sulema Lujan, both of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ Helen Gober EARLY -- Helen England Gober, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, 82, of Abilene passed away Sunday at her home. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Eastlawn Memorial Park. Viewing was at the Elliot-Hamil Funeral Home in Abilene until 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and then at Davis-Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until service time. Family received friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Elliot-Hamil Funeral Home in Abilene. Helen England Gober was born June 29, 1917, in Brown County and was raised in Brownwood. On Oct. 15, 1932, at age 15, she became the bride and lifelong partner of Walter Gober. In the early years of their marriage, they moved to Odessa. Throughout their marriage, Helen balanced the roles of successful wife, mother and businesswoman -- a generation before her time. Side by side, they founded many business ventures, including Gober & Sons Inc. and Odessa Venetian Blind Co., which is still operated by a nephew. In addition to their business activities, Helen was an active member of First Baptist Church and various PTAs. Upon retirement, Helen and Walter moved to Lake Amstead and then to Lake Spence, where she was a member of the Pecan Baptist Church. Helen taught Sunday School and participated in missions activities. Both lake homes served as family gathering spots where loving, lifelong memories were made and shared through generations. Anyone who knew Helen will miss her, as there will never be another like her; devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include her husband, Walter Gober of Abilene; brother, Jack England; wife, Ruth, of Gun Barrel City; sister-in-law, Ina Bell England of Del Rio; sister, Margie Carter of Temple; half-brother, Jimmy England of Georgia; half-sister, Nancy Cotton of Cleburne; son, David Gober and his wife, Grace, of Abilene, and Jack Gober and wife, Maggie, all of Odessa; daughters, Anna Brazzel and her husband, Ray, of Abilene and Margie Thornton and her husband, Ron, of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Jana and Jubal Zimmerman, Dana and Andy Wilbarger, Rhonda Gail, Jack Gober, Tonya and Todd Tillman, Stephen and Julie Brazzel, Kim Brazzel, Leighana Thornton, Anthony and Raye Thornton, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Frances and Thelma England, and a brother, Charles Frances "Bugs" England. Pallbearers were be Jack W. Gober, Anthony Thornton, Jubal Zimmerman, Todd Tillman, DeWitt England and Finley England. _________________________________________________________________ Marie Acker Mangrum BRACKETTVILLE -- Marie Acker Mangrum, 79, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 1999, in Del Rio. She was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Oney, Okla. Marie resided in Odessa for 30 years where she acquired many trades while attending Odessa College. She was known for the many talents and hobbies. She was an artist and musician. Many may remember her as the art teacher who inspired many to pursue their dreams of becoming artists. She later moved to Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville where she resided at the time of her death. She leaves us with many fond memories and she will be missed especially by her family. She is survived by her brothers, Kenneth "Muzzle" Edwards and Bobby Gene Edwards; a sister, Ellis La Costa Ivey; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Frontier Baptist Church in Brackettville with the Rev. Joe Townsend officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Odessa. Local arrangements under the direction of Don's Funeral Chapels in Del Rio. _________________________________________________________________ John W. Shanks BIG SPRING -- John W. Shanks, 61, of the Blue Sage West Community on the Devil's River north of Del Rio, died on Sunday, July 4, 1999, at his residence. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Robert Rachuig, minister of Elbow Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. He was born Jan. 12, 1938, in Proctor and was a Baptist. He retired after 38 years as a mechanical maintenance superintendent from Phillips Petroleum Corp. His love of nature was only overshadowed by his love for his family. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Brant Burrows of Lubbock, and his daughter, Staci Bobbitt of Okarche, Okla.; granddaughter, Lacy Burrows of Lubbock; seven brothers, Autov Shanks of the Blue Sage Community on the Devil's River north of Del Rio, Charlie Shanks, Wade Shanks, Clim Shanks and Howard Shanks, all of Big Spring, Grover Shanks of Lake Brownwood and Doyle Shanks of Proctor Lake; two sisters, Jimmye Burks and Mae Shanks, both of Big Spring. Family suggests memorials be made to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, 7979 Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, Texas, 78229. Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Bertha Wooten, devoted mother and grandmother, passed away July, 5, 1999, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. She moved to the West Texas area and settled in Grandfalls. She then moved to Odessa in 1979. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Griffin Jones officiating. Burial will be at Leakey Cemetery in Leakey. Bertha was employed by Gibsons for several years. She had been an employee of Walgreens for the past 14 years. She was known as "the Pin Lady" because of the many beautiful and colorful animal pins that she wore on her smock at Walgreen's. She worked at the store on Eighth and Maple for most of her employment. More recently she was at the store on West University. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors and had an affinity for tropical flowers and hummingbirds. She absolutely loved the water, even though she didn't know how to swim. She loved to float the rivers of Texas and frolic in the ocean. The happiest day of her life was when she attended the birth of her grandson, Tahoe Alexander Mickle, last August. She cherished every moment with her only grandchild. She is survived by her daughter Grace Wooten Mickle, and son-in-law, Omer, and grandson Tahoe; mother, Francisca Gonzalez of El Paso; sisters, Velia Guiterrez of Midland and Librada Talavera of Chihuahua, Mexico; and brothers, Jorge Camargo and Rual Camargo, both of Juarez, Mexico. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. "God Bless You and be healthy in Heaven, Mom. I LOVE YOU!"
