August 11, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ OKLAHOLMA CITY -- Derrick LatheIl Shepard of Norman, Okla., formerly of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, in Laramie, Wyo., preparing for his first season as receivers coach for the University of Wyoming. Derrick was born Jan. 22, 1964, to Woodie and Rose Shepard of Odessa. He graduated from Odessa High where he was an outstanding athlete, a standout wishbone quarterback for the Odessa Bronchos in 1981, then on a national championship team at the University of Oklahoma and a Super Bowl team with the Washington Redskins in 1987 and moving on to the New Orleans Saints in 1989. He played with the Dallas Cowboys for three years before becoming a coach at U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City. He then took a position as a graduate assistant on John Blake's coaching staff at Oklahoma University. He was hired by Wyoming on June 30, 1999. Shepard is survived by his parents of the home; wife, Cheri of the home; and five children, Ashleigh, Sterling, and Shelby Shepard, and Dijon Norwood of Norman, Okla., and Bree Carter of Odessa; sisters, Patricia and Brenda Shepard of Odessa; brothers, Darrell Shepard of Wichita Falls and Woodie Shepard of Norman, Okla.; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at the St. John' Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church, 1615 E. Murphy Street, Odessa, Texas.
