August 15, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Manuela Gomez Abila, 73 years of age, passed away on August 13, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born on September 29, 1925, in Barstow. Mrs. Abila was a member of St. Joseph's and St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Lady's Altar Society, the Carmelites and the Crusillistas. Mrs. Abila was preceded in death by her son, Cepriano Abila, and her sister, Elauteria Salgado. She is survived by her husband, Antonio Abila of Odessa; sons, Felipe Abila and his wife, Maria, of Odessa, Paul Abila and his wife, Lydia, of Brownwood, Greg Abila and his wife, Annette, of San Antonio, Tony Abila Jr. and his wife, Lupe, of Odessa and Manuel Abila of Odessa; one daughter, Mary Abila Heredia and her husband, Manuel, of Odessa; brothers, George Gomez of Odessa, Epifanio Gomez of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Maria Salgado of Midland, Paulina Ojeda of Pecos and Cecilia Correra of Midland. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Martinez Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ AUSTIN -- Jo Elizabeth Landers Gurr was killed Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1999, in an automobile/motorcycle accident. She was born in Alpine, Aug. 21, 1973, to Donald E. and Eva Nell Landers. Memorial services were held Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at All Saints Episcopal Church. A sunset memorial service was conducted by the Rev. Steven Birdwell in Abilene Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999. Interment was in the Drummound Cemetery in Abilene. Jo Beth was a 1991 honor graduate of Fredricksburg High School. She was a graduate in December 1996 from the University of Texas at Austin of Pharmacy. While attending the University of Texas she was a member of Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, the University of Texas Student Society of Heath System Pharmacies and the Professional Association of Compounding. She was accepted into the Colleges Honors Program under the supervision of Dr. Patrick J. Davis, Medical Chemistry Department. She was also awarded the honor of Deans List for eight consecutive semesters. At the time of her death, she was an employee of North Austin Medical Center. Survivors include her husband, Ronald Myers Gurr Jr. of Cedar Park; parents, Donald E. and Eva Nell Landers of Clyde, formerly of Odessa; brother, Wade Landers, of the University of Texas at Austin; parents-in-law, Ronald and Sally Gurr of Marko, Fla.; sister-in-law, Danielle Campbell and husband Bill of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother-in-law, Bill Landers and wife Brenda of Gainesville, Ga.; maternal grandmother, Ouida Biggers of Odessa; paternal grandfather, Roland Miller of Abilene; aunts, Victoria Holland and husband Dudley of Larmatir, N.M.; Donnita Cole of Center; four nieces and two nephews; an a host of relatives and friends. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Services for Larry Bridwell, 68, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at The First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Mr. Bridwell died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born March 11, 1931, in Pattonsburg, Mo. He married Mildred Holliman on Jan. 5, 1975, in Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Bridwell moved to Odessa in 1954 from Enid, Okla. He was a petroleum consultant. He was a 32-degree master mason. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Bridwell of Houston; son, Randy Bridwell of Houston; two step-daughters, Carol Baker and Vivian Smith, both of Odessa; parents, Elmer and Kathryn Turner of Enid, Okla; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA --Services for Alvis W. (Al) Glaspy, 75, of Gardendale, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Eric Seay officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Glaspy passed from this life on Aug. 13, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born July 8, 1924, in Clarksville. He married Mary Lou Scott on May 7, 1950, in Austin. Mr. Glaspy loved his family above all else and showed that love in many wonderful ways. Mr. Glaspy was a true friend to many, and anyone who came in contact with him loved and shared that friendship from that moment on. Mr. Glaspy loved Longhorn cattle. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He was a Mason. Mr. Glaspy is survived by three daughters, Gae Glaspy of Odessa, Ann Bird and her husband Louis of Odessa, and Sue Adcock and her husband Steve of Cedar Hill; one sister, Lucille Worthy and her husband John of Greenville; four grandchildren, Adam Bird, Matthew Bird, Zachary Adcock and Taylor Adcock; nieces, nephews and many friends. Mr. Glaspy was a member of the Baptist Church. He will be remembered and missed by his family and all who knew him.
