August 19, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ James Richard "Jim" Johnston ODESSA -- James Richard "Jim" Johnston, 70, of Odessa, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at his residence. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born July 3, 1929, in Sharon, Okla. Mr. Johnston moved to Odessa in 1957 from Borger. He retired from El Paso Products Aug. 1, 1984. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billy Ruth Barfield Johnston; and his brothers, Charlie Johnston, Jack Johnston and Elton Ray Johnston. Survivors include his son, Richard Heady and wife, Dianna, of Roscoe; daughter, Barbara Bass of Fort Worth; brothers, J.P. Johnston of Borger and Casey Garrett; sister, Bessie Lou Duggan of Weatherford, Okla.; sister-in-law, Velma Clark of Odessa; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Mozell Hamilton Whittaker, 83, of Odessa passed away August 14, 1999, at Parks Methodist Retirement Center in Odessa. She was born October 10, 1915, in Frankston. Graveside memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Mozell was the salutatorian of the class of 1932 at Frankston High School. She went to business school in Houston. During World War II, she served in the S.P.A.R.S. women's division of the Navy, and she remained in Civil Service for many years following. She married Fred Whittaker August 8, 1958, in Houston. She loved to travel and she and Fred took many cruises and trips to various parts of the world.
