September 5, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ MARFA -- Emogene Chancey, 83, of Odessa died Sept. 2, 1999, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. David Henry officiating. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Marfa Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Mrs. Chancey was born in Marfa on August 3, 1916. She was the only child of Charles E. Porter and Celestine Kerr Porter. Her father was a pharmacist, and the Porters owned the Rexall drug store in Marfa for many years. It has been said that little Emogene, after being told by her parents that she could have only a spoonful of ice cream while visiting the store, could get more ice cream on a spoon than her parents could on a scoop. She regaled her family with many stories about when the movie people came to town to make the movie "GIANT." Her favorite was Rock Hudson, who would round up all the children he could find and treat them to ice cream sodas at the drugstore. The Porters left Marfa to live briefly in Arkansas and El Paso. She loved to ride the trolley cars in El Paso and often took the trolley into Juarez. After high school she attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine. Emogene met and married Jim Chancey in Marfa, where they established a home. Mr. Chancey was at one time a dealer for International Harvester and had a Pontiac dealership. After a short stint doing clerical work in the legal profession, Mrs. Chancey decided to help her husband in his many business ventures while at the same time starting their family. In 1954, the Chanceys moved to Odessa where they owned and ran Ace Equipment Company. All of the Chancey children were educated in the Odessa school system. When the children married and left home, the Chanceys, with their son Terry, moved to Del Rio and started Bronco Truck and Equipment. They have a farm on the Rio Grande where they lived until April 1998 when they moved back to Odessa for health reasons. Emogene was affectionately known as "Pinkie" to all her family and friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed crocheting, birdwatching, loved airplanes and learned to fly when there weren't many women in West Texas with a pilot's license. She was a long standing member of the Episcopal church and was a Daughter of the Republic of Texas. She also enjoyed fishing at the family pond and enjoyed the hottest of Southwest cuisine. She was a crack shot and didn't hesitate to dispense "buckshot" when she felt it was warranted. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles E. Porter and Celestine Kerr Porter; sons, Kevin Chancey, Jimmy Chancey and Allen Chancey; and grandson, Chase Green. Survivors include her husband, Jim Chancey of Odessa; sons, Jay P. Chancey and Terry William Chancey; daughter, Andrea Green, all of Odessa; her aunt, Margaret Matlock of Del Rio; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several cousins. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Jeffery Owen Clark left this life to be with his Lord on September 1, 1999.
