September 12, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- J.C. Beaird, 68, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Odessa Medical Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1930, in Jones County, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Odessa with Rev. Kevin Strempke officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Abilene with Mark Mayfield officiating. Pallbearers will be Elmo Moore, Graham Prickett , Don McBee, Jerry Cobb, Don Belcher and Haskel Moore. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Mr. Beaird graduated from Merkel High School in 1947 and from Ranger Junior college in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He married Wanda Boyd March 6, 1953, in Abilene. They moved from Abilene to Odessa in September 1957. J.C. worked for El Paso Products (Rexene) from September 1957 until his retirement in January 1990. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Fellowship Lodge #1385 in Odessa. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He loved to travel. J.C. was a very family-oriented person. He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Beaird of Odessa; his mother, Maymie Hardin of Midland; one son, Larry Beaird and his wife, Tisha, of Weatherford; one daughter, Jana Mayfield and her husband Mark of Marble Falls; four grandchildren, Seth and Hannah Mayfield and Emma and Jake Beaird; one sister, Wanda Harris and her husband, Billy, of Midland, brother-in-law, Roger Boyd and his wife, Iwanda, of Abilene; sister-in-law Jean Dalton of Odessa; and many nieces and nephews and friends. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, or to a favorite charity. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, 4635 Oakwood Drive, Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ Paula Denise Bachman ODESSA -- Paula Denise Bachman, 44, of Odessa, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Revs. Freida Bryant and Holly Ensey officiating. She was born July 24, 1955, in Tucson, Ariz. Denise moved to Odessa in 1970 from Illinois. She obtained her bachelors degree at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and a master's degree at Texas Woman's University. She has been employed at Odessa College as a learning resources specialist and head of technical services for 12 years. Survivors include her daughter, Erin Bachman and grandchildren, Christopher Frank Fowler and Madison Nicole Fowler, all of Odessa; parents, Harvey and Carolyn Sue Reed of Odessa; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Joyce Reed and children, Corbin Reed and Misty Bassham, all of Visalia, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Falena and Ron Hurt of Baltimore, Md.; Uncle and Aunt, Rick and Sharon Singer and family of Mount Carmel, Ill. The family suggests memorials to the Odessa College Scholarship Fund in memory of Denise Bachman. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Services for Joe W. Estoll, 70, of Odessa will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Estoll went to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999. He was born Jan. 25, 1929, in Trent. He married Evelyn Sims Aug. 6, 1952 in Odessa. She died April 2, 1999. Mr. Estoll came to Odessa in 1945. He worked as a pipeline maintenance contractor in the oilfield and retired in 1987. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was Baptist. Survivors include his sons, Stanley Estoll of Denver and Ricky Estoll of Odessa; daughters, Cathy Garvin of Elgin and Debbie Brooks of Odessa; sister, Lillian Doan of Merkel; grandchildren, Kimberley Garvin of Taylor, Christian Estoll, Cody Brooks, Chelsey Estoll and Chris Estoll, all of Odessa; and lifelong friend, Billy Doan. Holcomb passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Lois Owen Retirement Residence in Odessa. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Frank Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Grace was born to Charlie and Nora Blankenship on July 17, 1915, near Polar in Kent County. The family later moved to Burkburnett, and then on to Electra where Grace was raised. She married Arnold L. (Blackie) Holcomb on April 23, 1933, in Frederick, Okla. They had one son, Arden Ray Holcomb, born in 1934. In 1936, they moved to Odessa, where they lived until their deaths. Grace was very active in her younger life. She was a loving wife and mother. She always participated in her son's activities. She even played in one of his school plays. She played the part of Amanda and did it so well, her husband lovingly called her Amanda. She worked right by Arnold's side when they owned and operated Holcomb Bail Bond. Grace had been a member of the First Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was a past member of the Rebecca Lodge. She was a member of several bridge clubs. She was a member of the Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary for 22 years and didn't become inactive until her health failed her. She was not only a sweet and tender person, but also a caring and sharing person. She and her husband helped several young people with their education as well as always sharing with the less fortunate. Grace was like Florence Nightingale in that she loved helping the sick. She spent endless hours visiting friends and loved ones that were ill. Her heart's delight was cooking and taking food to the sick and bereaved and she continued to do so until her health failed. Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold in 1973; her son, Arden in 1990; and sisters, Ruby Presley, Frances Nelson and Margie Havens; her brother, C.J. (Bud) Blankenship; and her nephew, Royce Maxey. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Deidre Holcomb of Odessa; one sister, Tennie Maxey of Odessa; granddaughter and husband, Denise and Nelson Minyard; grandson and wife, Chris and Kerry Holcomb of Odessa; four great-grandchildren, Michael and Christina Minyard and Kyndi and Kali Holcomb; nieces, Glenda Mathers of Odessa, Jamie Collins and Carolyn Dennis of Lubbock, and Jeanette Stulkin of Gladewater; nephews, Homer Nelson of Colorado City and Ed Allison of Bowie; several great-nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends, all of whom loved her dearly. She will be missed by many, including the Lois Owen Retirement Home, where she was loved and treated like family. Wilson Funeral Directors. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Lloyd Allen Sanders, 75, of Odessa, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999. He was born Aug. 12, 1924, in El Dorado, Kan. Mr. Sanders married Ruby Kathryn Roper Nov. 23, 1947, in Wichita, Kan., and they moved to Odessa in 1962 from El Dorado. He retired from Occidental Petroleum in 1985 after 39 years of service. He was a member of the Crescent Park Baptist Church and Oil City Sam's RV Club. He was a member of the El Dorado Masonic Lodge and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Lloyd is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruby; son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Valarie Sanders of The Colony; daughter, Denise Smith of Odessa; six grandchildren, one great grandson; and brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Pauline Sanders of El Dorado. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Wilson Funeral Directors. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Gloria Elizabeth Turner was born on March 9, 1928, in Los Angeles, Calif. She passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Kinman officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Pallbearers will include Bob Howard, Carlton Fry, Oscar Ross, Lynn Moore, Allen Garret and Billy Blackstock. Honorary pallbearers are Don Gist, Hershel Montgomery and Bill Edge. Mrs. Turner came to Odessa in 1954. She worked as a waitress for the Barn Door, the Holiday lnn and also the Shrimp Boat many years ago. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Gloria is survived by her sons, Sonny Turner and his wife, Terri of Odessa and Ron Turner and his wife Susan of Mesquite; her grandchildren, Sunni, Lora, Stuart, Shonna and Shannda Turner and Jason and Jamie Hammick; her great grandson, Trevor Michael Turner; and also her beloved pets, Tiffany and Tony. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, whom she loved very much. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 811 Central Dr., Odessa, Texas 79761. _________________________________________________________________ Claudia Mae Bell Willis CRANE -- Claudia Willis, born in Diboll, passed away Sept. 9, 1999, at the age of 82. She owned and operated the Crane Flower Shop from 1948 until the early 1980s. Claudia was a member of Eastern Star and Senior Citizens, where she held various offices throughout her membership. She was a member of Crane United Methodist Church where she was an active member, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School. Claudia was preceded in death by her husband, John Willis. She is survived by her son, Bill Willis and wife, Michel; grandchildren, Kelly Willis Garner, Amy Willis, Brian Cornwell and Amie Nance; great-grandchildren, Tell and Athena Choat; brothers, Tom Bell and wife, Jerry, and Joe Bell and, wife, Ilene; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the very special family of Joe and Wanda Henderson and their children, Joe Jr. and Marissa. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at Crane United Methodist Church. Officiating ministers are Craig and Raqual Mull. Pallbearers are Kenneth Abbott, Joe Henderson, Roger Hailey, Tank Nelson, Gene Cowden and Matt Gary. Honorary pallbearers are Ted Hogan, Don Chaney, Mack McGlothlin, Jerry Hagler, Lewis Cass and Gary Moore. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
