October 06, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Johnny Lee "Cowboy" Canady was born on Sept. 18, 1935, in Caldwell, to Orlean Canady and Hallie Carrol Canady. Johnny enjoyed his life and was a friend to all who knew him. He was employed by Jones Brothers Dirt and Paving Construction for 25 years. He married Helena Bankston in 1970 and was a member of Greater St. John Baptist Church. Mr. Canady passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at Martinez Funeral Home, with the family to receive friends from 8 until 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greater St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Elder Shelton officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Johnny is survived by his wife, Helena of Odessa; six brothers, the Rev. Edward Canady of Lubbock, Willie Canady of Waco, Walter Canady of Rosewell, N.M., Dennis Canady of Killeen, Chester Canady of Caldwell and Joe L. Canady of Farmington, N.M.; and two sisters, Edna Matthews of Victorville, Calif., and Hallie L. Dawson of Caldwell. He leaves to cherish his memories many relatives and friends. Martinez Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. _________________________________________________________________ Louise H. Helm FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Louise H. Helm, 78, of Flagstaff, Ariz., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at a Prescott Valley care home. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Her father was the founder and first pastor of the Baptist Church of Odessa and Belmont Baptist Church. Mrs. Helm graduated from Odessa High School and attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene. She married Ernest Paul Helm in 1940 and lived in Odessa, El Paso and Wichita, Kan., before settling in Dallas to raise her family. She was a member of the PTA, North Dallas Garden Club, Coterie, Fool's Friday and was co-president with her husband of the Dallas Figure Skating Club. She moved back to Odessa in 1970 and opened a bookstore "Book Haven" with her high school friend, Helen McLendon. She retired in 1983 and moved to Alpine. In 1989, she moved to Cottonwood, Ariz., because of her health. She then moved to Prescott Valley, Ariz., in 1992. She was an avid gardener, rock hound, and loved restoring old houses and all social gatherings. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Jerri H. Bird in 1996. Survivors include her son, Richard E. Helm of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter, Paula J. Helm of Flagstaff, Ariz.; brother, William Carl Harrison of Fort Worth; sisters, Mildred Owen of Stephenville and Joyce H. Vaught of Bryan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made to the local chapter of Alzheimer's Association. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Dorothy Lee Logsdon, a longtime resident of Odessa, was born June 11, 1914, in Metcalfe County, Ky. She passed away Monday morning, Oct. 4, 1999, at her residence. Graveside services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Margaret Ledwith officiating. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. She married Youl Logsdon, Dec. 24, 1936, in Owensboro, Ken. He and a son, Jimmy Dale Logsdon, preceded her in death. Dorothy was a licensed vocational nurse and retired from Medical Center Hospital in 1982 after 25 years of service. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Logsdon of Odessa; son and daughter-in-law, Darrell W. and Becky Logsdon of Odessa; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. _________________________________________________________________ AUSTIN -- Buster Charles Reed passed away on Oct. 2, 1999, at the age of 89. He was born on July 12, 1910, in Mineral Wells. He moved to Odessa in 1937 and retired from Gulf/Chevron after 40 plus years of service. He was a master Mason and a member of Goldsmith Lodge No. 1276 for more than 50 years. He moved back to Mineral Wells and resided at the Crazywater Retirement Hotel before his final move to Austin. Buster is survived by one child, Vicki Ann Reed; two grandchildren, Cassandra Beam Stone and Daulton Reed Beam; and friend and former wife, Jo Russell. The family would like to thank the L&L Sunday House and The Christopher House for the excellent, loving care they gave Buster. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 4, 1999, at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Burial was at Cooke-Walden Forest Oaks Memorial Park. The Rev. Jerry Merritt officiated. Don Palmer officiating. Interment will follow at 5 p.m. at Plainview Memorial Park in Plainview with the Rev. Lee Walls officiating. She went to be with the Lord Monday, Oct. 4, 1999. She married Robert Earl Vaughn Sept. 14, 1940, who preceded her in death in 1973. She spent her life pursuing God and ministering to people. She loved to spend time with her family. She was the most powerful prayer warrior you could have known. She was a member of Life Unlimited Church and worked with the Golan Ministry for the last five years. Pallbearers will be Gregg Peacock, Paul Peacock, Ryan Phillips, Damon White and Robert Earl Vaughn II. Honorary pallbearer will be Steve Eve. She is survived by her three sons, Kenneth Vaughn of Angleton, Eddie Vaughn and wife, Fannell, of Humble and Robby Vaughn and wife, J'Nice, of Odessa; two daughters, Carol Peacock and husband, Milton, and Darlene Eve and husband, Scott, all of Odessa; five brothers, Wilton Walls of California, Lee Walls of Amarillo Clifton Walls of Montana, Elmer Walls of Indiana and Billy White of Denton; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
