October 08, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Helena Canady, 70, passed away Oct. 6, 1999. She was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Wharton to Menafee and Helen Bankston. A resident of Odessa, she is a homemaker and a member of Greater St. John Baptist Church. She was married to Johnnie Lee Canady, who passed away Oct. 1, 1999. Mrs. Canady is survived by her brothers, James Lockett of Eagle Lake, Augustine Bankston and B.J. Bankston, both of Wharton, J.T. Backstop of Houston; sisters, Doris Calhoun Backstop and Linda Backstop, both of Houston, Adlene Ball of Dallas; and many other relatives and friends. A double funeral service for Johnnie Lee and Helen Canady will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Greater St. John Baptist Church with Elder Shelton officiating. Burial side by side at Rose Hill Cemetery will follow. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ maxwell100899.jpg (12401 bytes) Erma Lee Bishop Maxwell ODESSA -- Erma Lee Bishop Maxwell died Oct. 7, 1999, at 9:50 a.m. at her home, 2708 N. Hancock, Odessa. Erma Lee Maxwell was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Breckenridge and moved to Odessa in 1941 where she met Roscoe Maxwell in 1946 and was married June I that same year. Erma Maxwell was a faithful member of Belmont Baptist Church for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved the Lord, her family and her church. Her daily prayer was to make a difference in every life she touched, which she did to all who knew her. Her son, Stephen Lynn Maxwell, preceded her in death, also her sister, Ruby Davis; and her brother, Clarence C.O. Bishop. Survivors include her husband, Roscoe Maxwell of Odessa; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Larry Bledsoe of Midland; grandson, Barry and his wife Amanda Bledsoe of Midland; grandson, Brandon Bledsoe of Austin; two great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Dayden Bledsoe of Midland; sisters, Thelma Robison of Midland, Marie Cronin of Maryland; and 14 nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999. Services by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ John Runyan "Jack" Neary ODESSA -- John Runyan "Jack" Neary, 78, of Odessa, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his residence. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. He was born May 23, 1921, in New Brunswick, N.J. He married Jennie Hargett Jan. 18, 1946, in San Pedro, Calif. Mr. Neary came to Odessa in 1958 from New Brunswick, N.J. He was a truck driver in the oilfield. He was a jack of all trades and very handy with his hands. He always had a smile, because he enjoyed life. He enjoyed Louis L'Amour books, John Wayne movies, and fishing and was one of the original Grumpy Old Men. He was in the Army in the Infantry 44th Division from 1939 to 1945. He was proud that his first son had also served in the military. He was preceded in death by his son, John Runyan Neary II on May 1, 1968. Survivors include his wife, Jennie Neary of Odessa; son, Bruce Neary of Houston; daughter, Helen Wolf of El Capitan, N.M., and Rosemarie Yarborough of Odessa; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Pearson, 91, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in a local hospital. Mrs. Pearson was born March 16, 1908 in Cement, Okla. She married Clifton Pearson in 1926 in Chickasha, Okla., and he preceded her in death. She had been a resident of Odessa since 1965. She was an active member of AARP and helped develop the Northside Senior Citizen Center where she was a member of the Bridge Club. She is survived by four grandchildren, Mickey Warlick of Houston, Janet Martin of Hobbs, N.M., Margaret Cox of New Berg, Ore., and Dawn Gray of Las Cruces, N.M.; one nephew, Timothy Keleher of Odessa; 1 niece, Roslyn Mclntyre; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Bratcher officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Linda Jo Rushing ODESSA -- Linda Jo Rushing, 52, of Odessa, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at 6:45 a.m. She was born Feb. 15, 1947, in Artesia, N.M. She married Ken Rushing in Artesia, N.M. They lived in Roswell, N.M., from 1973 to 1983 and moved to Odessa in 1991 from Monahans. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Ken Rushing of Odessa; son, Scott Palmer of Brownwood; daughter, Tammy Urias of Odessa; brother, "Howdy" Geurin of Roswell, N.M.; and two grandchildren.
