October 19, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ COLEMAN -- Billie Jean Allen, 70, of Odessa, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Sunday afternoon at her home. She was born June 24, 1929, in Callahan County. She married Ralph Milton Allen on May 10, 1947, in Merkel. They moved from Coleman to Odessa in 1976. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sam Jordan and Brother Jimmy Dennis officiating. She will be put to rest in Rough Creek Cemetery in Novice, immediately following the services. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Milton Allen of Odessa; a son, Don Allen, and his wife Victoria of Coleman; two daughters, Peggy Giba of Odessa and Pam Alexander and her husband J. D. of Odessa; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lynn SteakIey of Weatherford and Howard SteakIey of Abilene; two sisters, Sue Gibson of Farmington, N.M., and Jerri Sterling of Spanish Fort. She was loved and will be missed by all, but we know that we will see her again one day soon in that big beautiful mansion in the sky. The family will be at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. for visitation. Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman is handling all of the arrangements. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA -- Billie Jeanne Bates was born March 14, 1931, in Wichita Falls, the daughter of Mary and Bill Pardo. She died Monday, Oct. 18. 1999, at home after a long battle with cancer. Billie Jeanne came to Odessa in 1947, graduating in the class of 1948 from Odessa High School. On Dec. 23, 1951, she married W. D. "Mooch" Bates in Odessa, and was a helpmate for him while he finished Baylor University in Waco. She was an avid sports fan, being both a participant and a spectator. She served as secretary of the Permian Football Booster Club. BiIIie was a tennis player and golfer at Odessa Country Club. She was a member of the Ladles Golf Association at OCC and toured with the West Texas-New Mexico Senior Golf Association with her husband. Part of her enthusiasm for the outdoors was directed to breeding and raising Brangus cattle at their Marble Falls ranch, and she served as secretary of the Texas Brangus Breeders Association. Survivors Include her husband, W.D. "Mooch," of the home; her son and his wife, Larry and Judy Bates of Odessa; her daughter and her husband, Denise and Jim Livingston of Lakeway; grandchildren, April and Angie Bates of Odessa, Colby Ansley and Riley Livingston of Lakeway; her aunt, Ramey Blakely of Houston; brothers-in-law and wives, Morris and Reba Jo Bates and Foy Bates of Odessa, Pat and Betty Bates of Graham; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church, conducted by Dr. David Mendel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Foy Bates, Morris Bates, Glen Taylor, Tommy Tucker, Bro Hill and Tommy Melton. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. _________________________________________________________________ Barbara Howell STANTON -- Barbara Howell, 75, of Odessa, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, in her residence. Memorial services were Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Odessa with Melvin Warren officiating. She was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Joplin, Mo., and married Joe Howell Sept. 21, 1941 in Joplin, Mo. He preceded her in death in August 1995. She was a former resident of Lafayette, La., and Seattle, Wash. She was a member of V.I.M. in Lafayette, La. Survivors include a son, Jay Howell of Kent, Wash.; daughter, Sharon Kelley of Odessa; three granddaughters, Stephanie McCrackin of Seattle, Wash., Amy Wood and husband Gary of Houston and Leslie Howell of Tomball; five grandsons, Todd Kelley and wife Janet of Temple, Brent Kelley of Kemp, Steve Kelley and wife Vicki of Stafford, Jason Howell and Sean Howell, both of Seattle, Wash.; one great-granddaughter, Madison Kelley of Temple; five great-grandsons, Zack Kelley of Stafford, Nathan Kelley of Temple, Evan McCrackin of Seattle, Wash., and Michael Wood and Christopher Wood, both of Houston. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gaylen Howell; and a grandson, Trey Howell. Memorials may be made to Community Care Hospice, 3641 N. Dixie, Odessa, Texas 79762.
