December 17, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Pauline Westerfeldt Fuller ODESSA -- Pauline was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Amity, Ark., to Jessie L. and Georgia Deering Powell. She passed away on Dec. 15, 1999, in El Paso. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Pauline came to Odessa in 1938. She enjoyed painting and was a very active painter. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Odessa and also was active in the De Molay Mother's Club and the Republican Women's Club in the 1960s. She moved back to Amity in 1967 and in 1999, after an injury, moved to El Paso to be near her sister. Survivors include her sons; Jack Westerfeldt Jr. and Robert Lynn Davidson, both of Odessa; daughters, Georgiana McCord of El Paso and Marian Seglem of Odessa; sister, Earl Chilton of El Paso; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husbands, Horace Davidson, Jack W. Westerfeldt Sr. and Terry Fuller, preceded her in death. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Alzheimer's association or to the hospice of your choice. _________________________________________________________________ William (Bill) E. Norton ODESSA -- Bill Norton, of Odessa, died Dec. 15, 1999, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village. He was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Birmingham, Ala. He married Betty M. McCracken on June 12, 1945, in Tulsa, Okla. Together they moved to Odessa in 1948 and were blessed with three children, Jimmy, John and Sid. In November 1942 Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to duty in the South Pacific area in April 1943. By November 1943 he was part of the invasion of Bougainville. In June 1944, he was assigned to Puruata Island, commonly referred to as "Hell on the Bulls Eye." After 13 months of Puruata, Bill was deployed to reclaim a U.S. Army base that had been overtaken by Japanese. During his enlistment, he was part of the invasion of Peleliu, finishing his enlistment in 1945. He was awarded an Honorable Discharge as a corporal of the U.S. Marines. When Bill first came to Odessa, he was employed by Bethlehem Steel, then went to work for Sivalls Tanks, where he managed Control Equipment, a subsidiary of Sivalls Tanks. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Howard Norton, a World War I veteran, and his mother, Sarah Norton. Bud Norton, his brother, died in January 1943 serving his country as a B-17 bombardier with the U.S. Air Force. Jimmy, Bill's eldest son, preceded him in death in a car accident in February 1966. Bill was known for his pride in God by all his family, friends and acquaintances for his country and family. He is survived by his wife, Betty Norton of Odessa; sons, Sid Norton of Odessa and John Norton of Houston. Grandchildren include Heather of Odessa, Christopher and Nicole of Houston. A family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout and Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. If desired, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Odessa or Community Care Hospice, 3641 N. Dixie, Odessa. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ Carl William Baden MIDLAND -- Carl William Baden, 92, died peacefully at Baptist Memorials Center in San Angelo at 7:32 p.m. on Dec. 11, 1999. Carl was born on Sept. 19, 1907, in Independence, Kan., and attended Zion Lutheran School in Independence and Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb. He was employed by an affiliate of Standard Oil Company of Indiana, working for them in Wewoka and Tulsa, Okla.; North Cowden, Greggton, Longview, Abilene, and Fort Worth, before moving to Midland in 1959; he worked for Magpegasus Credit Union and M System Food Stores in Midland after he retired. Later in life he performed many hours of volunteer work at Hospice and Midland Memorial Hospital. Midland services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 3000 West Golf Course Road, with Pastors Donald Hafemann and Philip Konz officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Highway in Midland. A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. He married Ruth Pennekamp on June 4, 1935, in Independence. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, by three brothers, Louis, Walter, and his twin brother, John, and three sisters, Martha, Eleanor, and Dorothy. Survivors include his three sons: Dr. Robert C. and wife, Dr. Marian, of Orange, Calif., Thomas W. and wife, Betty, of San Angelo, Dr. Donald J. and wife, Elaine, of Glen Carbon, Ill.; 10 grandchildren: Brent Baden, Brenda Smith, Daniel Baden, Corwin Baden, Erik Baden, Karla Scott, Kyle Baden, Christine Reinagel, Mark Baden, and David Baden; and 11 great-grandchildren: Graham, Clair, Mackenzie, Larkin, Ramsey, Carmen, Tiffany, Jacqueline, Andrew, David, and Madelyn. He is also survived by three sisters: Clara Koehler, Gertrude Polzien and Ruth Linde, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. He was an active church member all his life, including Grace Lutheran and Holy Cross Lutheran in Midland. He was instrumental in founding ImmanueI Lutheran Church of Rankin, where he and his wife served in lay ministry for nine years. He loved his church, family, work, friends, yardwork and gardening, shelling pecans, golfing, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He contributed to numerous charities, including three Lutheran universities: Concordia -- Seward, Neb., Concordia -- Austin, and Concordia -- Irvine, Calif. The family wishes to thank all the caring people connected with Baptist Memorials in San Angelo for their compassionate care this past year.
