December 21, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Ralph Ennis Dean KERMIT -- Ralph Ennis Dean, 84, passed away Dec. 18, 1999, at his residence in Odessa. He was born April 15, 1915, in Weatherford, Okla. Mr. Dean was a driller in the oil industry for more than 40 years. He later rehabilitated to shoe repair and was the owner of City Boot and Shoe Repair for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge No. 2914 and an endowed member of the Kermit Masonic Lodge No. 1258, Odessa Masonic Lodge No. 955, Crane Masonic Lodge, Andy Vaughn Lodge No. 1421, the El Paso/Odessa Scottish Rite, a lifetime member of the NARA, a participant in the Ector County Fairs and a member of the First Baptist Church Over 70s group. Mr. Dean is survived by his son, Richard Wade Dean of Kermit; daughter, Donna lrene Hopper of Midwest City, Okla.; sister, Doris Speakman of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, Michael W. Hopper, Kathryn L. Green and Joseph W. Hopper, all of Oklahoma City, and Brent E. Wiesen of Odessa; also surviving are seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home. Masonic graveside services have been scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kermit Cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel. _________________________________________________________________ Mariam Arlene "Jackie" Thurber ODESSA -- Mariam Arlene "Jackie" Thurber, 75, of Odessa, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at her residence. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Clayton officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born June 17, 1924, in Butler, Mo. She married Gorham Thurber Oct. 11, 1947, in Sapulpa, Okla. He preceded her in death July 16, 1993. Mrs. Thurber moved to Odessa in 1948 from New Mexico. She was a retired legal secretary for Gary Watkins. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Ted Thurber and wife, Phillis, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Marge Meyer of Belmont, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Chad and Kyle Thurber of Colorado Springs, Colo. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Juanell Holder ELIASVILLE -- Juanell Holder died Monday in Wichita Falls. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Eliasville Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Peters officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home in Graham is in charge of the arrangements. She was born Oct. 24, 1932, in Runnels County. She moved to Odessa in 1944 and married L.J. "Sonny" Holder June 25, 1948, at the First Baptist Church in Odessa. She owned and operated Juanell's Beauty Walk in Odessa for many years. She and her husband retired in I986 and moved to Young County. L.J. "Sonny" Holder was the owner of Sonny Holder and Sons Inc. in Odessa. She was preceded in death by her father, I.O. "Buck" Brooker; and a grandchild, Brandi Holder. Survivors include her husband, Sonny Holder of Eliasville; sons, Ronald Holder and Royce Holder, both of Odessa, and Rodney Holder of Houston; mother, Lois Brooker of Odessa; brother, L.D. Brooker of Odessa; four grandchildren, Heather Holder, B.J. Holder, Tifni Holder and Jayme Holder; and two great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ TERRELL -- Larry D. Masters, 55, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, from melanoma. Larry was raised in Odessa by his loving parents, Dois and Hazil Masters, and one brother, Benny (his best friend). Larry graduated from Permian High School in 1962, Texas Tech in 1966 and he was in the Navy for four years. Larry settled in Dallas as an electrical engineer until his death. He is survived by his parents, brother and his wife Kimberly. "If something is worth doing, it's worth overdoing" is the motto Larry lived by. His family and friends will remember him for his love of his Bronco, kittens and his ultimate workshop. Memorial services were Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, in Terrell.
