December 30, 1999 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Manuel Reyes ODESSA -- On Dec. 29, 1940, the Good Lord sent us a kind, gentle, humble man. This day was so special that the Good Lord called him home 59 years later on his birthday, Dec. 29, 1999. While living on this earth this Christian man was a wonderful husband, devoted father, brother, and loving grandfather. We, his family, will miss him dearly and will cherish the precious memories that he left us. We shared him on this earth and now are at peace knowing he will be with our Lord Jesus Christ. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Fidelo Lugo officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. Public visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday. He is survived by his wife, Zulema Reyes; daughter, Brenda Chavez and her husband, Raymond; son, Fernando Reyes and his wife, Tina; grandchildren, Erika Chavez, Brandon Chavez, Devyn Reyes, and Jeylon Reyes, all of Odessa; four brothers, Eliazar Reyes and Carlos Reyes, both of Ohio, Raul Reyes of Arizona, and Rigoberto Reyes of Texas; and two sisters, Virginia Reyes and Juanita Reyes, both of Ohio. We would like to give a special thanks to all of our family and friends who have been here for us through this hard time. _________________________________________________________________ Lena Bell Hawley ODESSA -- Lena Bell Hawley, 87, of Odessa died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Don Turskey and Roy Smalling officiating. She was born March 22, 1912, in Mount Pleasant. She married Fred Hawley Oct. 8, 1938, in Hobbs, N.M. He preceded her in death Jan. 22, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kelle Jo Hawley. Mrs. Hawley moved to Odessa in 1977 from Kermit. She was a homemaker and a member of Eisenhower Church of Christ. Survivors include her son, Bentley Hawley of Odessa; son, Dewey Dean Alford of Odessa; sister, Essie Mae Skelton of Hobbs, N.M.; granddaughter, Leslie Lynn Wilson; and three great-grandchildren, Kelle Case Wilson, Mackenzi Jo Wilson and Landri Alysse Wilson. The family suggests memorials to Kelly Jo Hawley Scholarship Fund at Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Franklin Foster Lovering Franklin Foster Lovering, 87, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, in Albuquerque N.M., after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Golding Lovering of Albuquerque; son, Franklin Peter Lovering of Bend, Ore.; daughters, Janet R. Thompson, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kathy L. Newens of Longmont, Colo.; brothers, John Lovering of Framingham, Mass., and Ralph Lovering of Palm Coast, Fla.; sisters, Ruthe Hubbell of Conway, N.H.; Jane Greene of Houston; grandchildren, Kris and Tim Lovering of Talent, Ore., Curt Kessler of Portland, Ore.; Craig Kessler of Austin and Jacque Kessler of Sherman Oaks, Calif. Frank was born July 5, 1912, in Medford, Mass. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated with honors from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1935. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth Golding of Medford, in 1937. He was an engineer with Phillips Petroleum Co. for 42 years and resided in Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma, during his Iong and distinguished career. He retired as Permian Basin Regional Manager in 1977 in Odessa. He had recently moved to Albuquerque, N.M., to be near his family. Interment of cremains will be in the family plot near Hamilton, Mass., at a later date. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to your favorite charity. _________________________________________________________________ Nan Preston Ray ODESSA -- Nan Preston Ray, formerly of Roswell, N.M., died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Midland Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, at the age of 90. She was born Oct. 25, 1909, to the Rev. and Mrs. Thomas William Preston of Argyle, Texas. She received her education at Southern Methodist University and Texas Women's University, where she graduated with a Bachelor's of Education Degree. She moved to Roswell in 1930 and taught in the Roswell Public School System for four years, prior to her marriage in 1934 to Hilton Henry Ray. She was included in the "Who's Who of American Women" in 1959 and was a charter member and past president of Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, Assistance League of Chaves County, the Investment Club and the Wednesday Book Club. She was also active in the P.T.A., Olivet Bible Study Club, Girl Scouts of America, Pecos Garden Club, American Association of University Women, Order of the Eastern Star, Roswell Woman's Club and the RosweIl Country Club. She joined the First United Methodist Church in Roswell in September of 1930, where she taught an adult Bible Class for 20 years and held numerous offices in the Sunday school and the Woman's Society of Christian Service. Her hobbies were travel, reading, writing and giving book reviews. Her philosophy of life, as taught and exemplified by her father, contains only three words: Work-Think-Laugh. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister; husband, Hilton Henry Ray; and daughter, Barbara Ray Chancellor of Odessa. She is survived by her son-in-law, J.C. Chancellor of Midland; by three grandsons, Rev. Hilton Chancellor and wife, Karen, of Midland, Preston Chancellor and wife, Susie, of Midland, and Rev. David Chancellor and wife, Cheri, of Lufkin; six great-grandchildren, Camden, Phillip, Gregory, Thomas, Courtney and Whitney; and her nephew, Gordon Tull Rea and wife, LaVonne, of Dallas.
