January 04, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries Adair Acker ODESSA — Adair Acker, 91, of Odessa died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at his residence. He was born Feb. 14, 1908, in Maydelle. He married Lois Acker April 10, 1934, in Mount Selma. They moved to Odessa in 1949 from Jacksonville. He was one of the first students enrolled at Texas Tech University. He later transferred to Sam Houston State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and was a teammate of Dizzy Dean. He taught Algebra and coached baseball at Odessa High School in the 1950s. He loved to hunt deer, quail and dove. He was preceded in death by his wife, May 30, 1989. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Blackie Adams and Beth and Bill White, all of Midland; grandchildren, Michael A. White and Tiffany White; great-grandson, Chase A. White; great-granddaughter, Laura Adams; and stepgrandson, Tommy Adams. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Lee Ella Burgess of Nacogdoches and brother-in-law, Louis Boon of Mount Selma; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Wilson Funeral Directors. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Annie Laura Barber, 82, of Odessa passed away Jan. 1, 2000, at her home in Odessa, Texas. She was born June 22, 1917, in Baird. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lynn Money will officiate. Mrs. Barber graduated from Midland High School in 1933. She married T.J. Barber in 1934 in Midland, and they moved to Odessa in 1937. She was an active member of Sherwood Church of Christ. She liked to read, she enjoyed music and loved to play the piano. Her family was her life, her primary goal was to be a good mother and grandmother, and she was. Mrs. Barber loved to sit on her front porch and say good-bye to the day. She was preceded in death by her husband, T.J. Barber, in 1984; and son, Zearal Barber in 1977. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Sibley of Odessa; sisters, Lottie Harvey of Odessa and Madilene and husband Robert Herbert of Midland; grandchildren, Lans Barber of Arlington, Leslie Barber of Havasu City, Ariz., Lane Barber of Austin, Kim Barber, Jonn Sibley of Odessa and Paige Fulton of Gardendale; and six great-grandchildren; nephews Kenneth and Sue Herbert of Midland. Daniel ODESSA — Joseph Wayne "J.W." Daniel, 82, of Odessa, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. He was born July 2, 1917, in Corsicana. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Interment will be at Ector County Cemetery with Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. J.W. served in the Army during World War II. He moved to Odessa in the late 1960s. He retired from the Texas Department of Transportation in 1977. He spent his retirement years doing what he loved most, writing songs. He is survived by a brother, Tildon Daniel of San Antonio; and a sister, Doris Fowler of Odessa. Stanley was born Nov. 8, 1950, in Beaumont and grew up in Kermit. Stanley and wife, Tela, married Nov. 15, 1979, in Fort Stockton. They are the owners of The Gun Company & Tackle Shop and Diamond Lanes in Odessa. Stanley enjoyed the great outdoors, and loved to hunt, fish and play golf. He enjoyed bowling and was an active member of ABC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Multiple Sclerosis Society, in the name of Stan’s cousin, Clay Walker. Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Tela Kaye Greene of Odessa; daughters, Courtney Greene of Odessa, Brandy Welch of Plano and Amy Fuqua and husband Steve of Katy; parents, Shorty and Pat Wright of Crosby; brother, Keith Greene of Beaumont; sister, Charla Hackett and her husband, Bubba of Crosby; two grandchildren, Sam and Gwen Fuqua of Katy; nieces, BreeAna Greene of Beaumount, Angie Lee of Crosby; and nephew, Eric McCorkle of Crosby. Survivors include his father, Baudilio Moya of Ojinaga, Mexico; mother, Eloisa Nabarrete of Odessa; son, Hector Moya Jr. and Trinidad Moya, both of Odessa; daughter, Iris Moya of Odessa; brother, Clemente Munoz of Odessa; sisters, Socorro Mata and Mary Rios, both of Odessa; and grandparents, Maria Nabarrete and Sabas Nabarrete, both of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Helen Lenore Sifford, 69, of Odessa died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at her residence. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ector County Cemetery with the Rev. Alton Towery officiating. She was born Dec. 3, 1930, in Big Spring. She married Clifford Sifford Oct. 25, 1963, in Odessa. He preceded her in death in 1991. Also preceding her in death was her son, Mickey Dale Meadows in 1987. Mrs. Sifford moved to Odessa in 1935 from Big Spring. She was a retired bookkeeper and a Baptist. She was a member of the Odessa Business Women’s Association. She enjoyed crocheting and dancing. Survivors include her daughter, Dyanna Leavelle and her husband Ron of Odessa; two grandchildren, Jimy Hinton and Kelley Hensley; and 12 great-grandchildren. Service entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Gerhard "Gay" Steensrud Mount HOREB, Wis. — Gerhard "Gay" Steensrud, age 85, died on Dec. 31, 1999, in Midland. The son of Lena and Elve Steensrud, he was born April 15, 1914, near Black Earth, Wis. He received his bachelor’s degree from Platteville Teacher’s College in 1949 and his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1961. He was a teacher and coach for 43 years in rural schools in Dane County, Wis., Mount Horeb High School in Mt. Horeb, Wis., Monroe High and Junior High Schools in Monroe, Wis., and the Milwaukee County Children’s Home School in Milwaukee. He refereed high school and college basketball for 31 years. Mr. Steensrud and his wife retired to Parkerville, Kan., in 1976 and moved to Weslaco in 1986. He was also known as a Norwegian entertainer, "Ole Olson", since he introduced the character through a radio program at WEKZ in Monroe, Wis., in the 1950’s. He remained active in his retirement entertaining and organizing activities in Parkerville, Kan., and Country Sunshine Park in WesIaco including the Parkerville Marathon and the Valley Winter Olympics. Recently he was the founding charter member of the Sons of Norway Palmedal Lodge in McAllen and served as the sports director. He is survived be his wife of 61 years, Eileen Steensrud of Midland; daughters and sons-in-law, Gayleen Pete Ienatsch of Odessa and Rogene Powers and Gary Kalian of Benicia, Calif.; his son and daughter-in-law, Grady and Sue Steensrud of Kennesaw, Ga.; four grandchildren and three great -grandchildren. Mr. Steensrud was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Arthur Steensrud. Memorial services were Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, in the chapel at Manor Park in Midland with Rev. Cheryl Homsher officiating. Visitation is scheduled at the Ellestad Funeral Home, 500 North 8th Street, Mount Horeb, Wis., from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Vermont Lutheran Church. The family suggest memorials to the Sons of Norway, Palmedal Lodge # 1-644, 421 North Main St., McAllen, Texas, 78501, or the American Heart Association. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — James Robert Wright, 91, of Odessa passed away Jan. 2, 2000, in a local hospital. Mr. Wright was born Aug. 24, 1908, in Limestone County. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1933 with a bachelor of business administration degree. He moved to Odessa 60 years ago and worked for Beckman Drilling Co. until 1945 and later worked for Forest Oil Co. as division manager for 29 years. He served 13 years as an Ector County Independent School District School Board member and on the Board of Directors for the Permian Basin Oil Show as membership chairman in the 1960’s. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he had served as Deacon and Elder and a member of the Odessa Masonic Lodge. He served with Meals On Wheels for over 10 years. He is survived by his wife, Paula Wright of Odessa; daughter, Kathy Flowers of Odessa; brother, W.D. Wright of Temple; sister, Josephine Wright of Waco; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Philip M. McLarty officiating.
