January 05, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries ODESSA — Adair Acker, 91, of Odessa, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at his residence. He was born Feb. 14, 1908, in Maydelle. He married Lois Acker April 10, 1934, in Mount Selma. They moved to Odessa in 1949 from Jacksonville. He was one of the first students enrolled at Texas Tech University. He later transferred to Sam Houston State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and was a teammate of Dizzy Dean. He taught Algebra and coached basketball at Odessa High School in the 1950s. He loved to hunt deer, quail and dove. He was preceded in death by his wife, May 30, 1989. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Blackie Adams and Beth and Phill White, all of Midland; grandchildren, Michael A. White and Tiffany White; great-grandson, Chase A. White; step-granddaughter, Laura Adams; and step-great-grandson, Tommy Adams. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Lee Ella Burgess of Nacogdoches and brother-in-law, Louis Boone of Mount Selma; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Wilson Funeral Directors. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — On Jan. 3, 2000, Edith Gatenby Omanson passed through the valley to be with her Heavenly Father and her heavenly family, after a valiant battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Provo, Utah, to John Dixon and Addie Krapp Gatenby where she grew up with two brothers, Jack and Bill Gatenby, all deceased. She married Charles Ross "Smokey" Omanson July 12, 1933. They later moved to California where they raised their two daughters, Dorothy Addie, deceased, and Maryann Omanson Hughes of Odessa. They moved to Odessa in February of 1959. She was preceded in death by her loving spouse in 1984; and her son-in-law, L.E. "Pete" Hughes. Mother was always a lady with perfect manners and a gentle way. Her home was one of her greatest joys and she spent many hours preparing it for her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, oil painting and knitting. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church in Odessa. She was a 61-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had served the Order faithfully. She was a member of Odessa Chapter 447 and Floyd Easterling 1074 and a past matron of Mispha Chapter 100 in Santa Maria, Calif. She is survived by her daughter, Maryann O. Hughes; grandson, Charles E. Hughes and his wife Kimberly; one great grandchild, Kimberlin of Odessa; and many nieces and nephews and many more wonderful friends. The Rev. Johnny Witherspoon will conduct services assisted by Rev. Dick Brown. Those serving as pallbearers are Homer Honea, Tom Elrod, A.L. Casparis, Tim Redwine and Bob Hukill. Memorials may be made to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas Ave., Odessa, Texas. A special thank you is extended to Dr. Dan Hendrickson and all of the Home Hospice caregivers and the staff of Seabury Nursing Center. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Rea Smith, 75, of Humble, Texas, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Select Specialty Hospital in Houston. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Cheryl Homsher officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born May 22, 1924, in Coahoma. She married Bill J. Smith Jan. 25, 1953, in Odessa. He preceded her in death May 20, 1973. Mrs. Smith was a longtime resident of Odessa and worked as a secretary at Ector County Coliseum for over 11 years. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Smith Ballard and her husband Cole of Kingwood; brother, A. W. Rowe and his wife, Gene of Colorado City; and many cousins, friends and other family members. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Eugene Debs Tucker was born May 30, 1913, in Athens and was raised in North and East Texas. He worked for a number of years for Gulf Oil before volunteering for military service in 1942, serving in the Air Force. He married his wife Doris in 1943 in Fort Worth. After World War II, he continued work with Gulf Oil working on seismic crews in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, finally residing permanently in Odessa in 1956. He ran his own businesses for a number of years and subsequently worked for National Lead and Tubeco before retirement. Survivors are his wife Doris; two children, Terry Divine with her husband Charlie of St. Louis and Don Tucker of Houston; one grandchild, Chuck Divine; two sisters, Myrtle Killgo of Dallas and Jo Buford of Pasadena; two brothers, Hollis Tucker of Pinckney, Mich., and Presley Tucker of Irving. He was preceded in death by two sons, David Gene and Jim L. Tucker; and two sisters, Percy Clark of Pasadena and Margaret Sullivan of Dallas. Eugene was a member of First Christian Church of Odessa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Odessa. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church of Odessa followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
