January 06, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Frederick Henry Gifford ODESSA — Henry was born July 12, 1951, in Rio Grande, Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina, to Frederick William and Margaret Zapico Gifford. He passed away Jan. 3, 2000, in Odessa at the age of 48. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. A wake is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Henry grew up and attended schools in Argentina. He taught school there and later moved to New Zealand to work in the oil industry. He moved to Odessa in 1976. He married Anna Maria Chabarria in Pecos Aug. 7, 1976. He went to work for Meither Machine and later for General Tire, now Ameripol Synpol, where he had worked for the last 12 years. He was a Steward in the local chapter of the United Steel Workers of America. Henry enjoyed water skiing and was also very involved with his children in their school activities. Survivors include his wife, Anna Maria Gifford; son, Frederick Steven Gifford of Odessa; daughters, Christina Ann Gifford, and Amy Diane Gifford both of Odessa; parents, Frederick and Margaret Gifford of Odessa; sisters, Margarita Mabel Gifford Chamorra of Argentina, Brenda Diana Gifford of Odessa and Susy Isabel Cleaveland of Mountain Home, Idaho; brother, William Alexander Gifford of Marshall; one grandson, Jarrod Steven Gifford; one stepgrandson, Dakota Fugere; and several nieces and nephews. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Levester Harris, 80, of Odessa died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Public visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. A.L. Patrick officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. He was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Texarkana, Ark., to Ada Boston. She preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Lovie Harris of Odessa; son, Lee Harris of Texarkana, Texas; and brother, Rolando Harris of San Francisco; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ Dorothy Hearn ODESSA — Services for Dorothy Hearn, 80, of Odessa are scheduled at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Rev. Bernard Getigan officiating. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Robert Lee Cemetery. She was born in Floral Park, N.Y., and was a resident of Odessa for 40 years. She married James Hearn in 1946 in Floral Park, N.Y. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Hearn was a Catholic and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was office manager for PAUL DOBBS PRINTING CO. until her retirement. (www.wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — On Jan. 3, 2000, Edith Gatenby Omanson passed through the valley to be with her Heavenly Father and her heavenly family after a valiant battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Provo, Utah, to John Dixon and Addie Krapp Gatenby where she grew up with two brothers, Jack and Bill Gatenby, all deceased. She married Charles Ross "Smokey" Omanson July 12, 1933. They later moved to California where they raised their two daughters, Dorothy Addie, deceased, and Maryann Omanson Hughes of Odessa. They moved to Odessa in February of 1959. She was preceded in death by her loving spouse in 1984; and her son-in-law, L.E. "Pete" Hughes. Mother was always a lady with perfect manners and a gentle way. Her home was one of her greatest joys and she spent many hours preparing it for her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, oil painting and knitting. She was a member of Belmont Baptist Church in Odessa. She was a 61-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had served the Order faithfully. She was a member of Odessa Chapter 447 and Floyd Easterling 1074 and a past matron of Mispha Chapter 100 in Santa Maria, Calif. She is survived by her daughter, Maryann O. Hughes; grandson, Charles E. Hughes and his wife, Kimberly; one great grandchild, Kimberlin of Odessa; and many nieces and nephews and many more wonderful friends. The Rev. Johnny Witherspoon will conduct services assisted by Rev. Dick Brown. Those serving as pallbearers are Homer Honea, Tom Elrod, A.L. Casparis, Gene Schneider, Sonny Baugh and Bob Hukill. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — David Louis Poyner, 76, of Odessa and Cooke County passed away Jan. 5, 2000, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Dave was born to Walter and Beth Guerin Poyner on June 19, 1923. He married his wife, Mildred, Oct. 2, 1998. Dave originally moved to Odessa in 1948 and worked for several companies before retiring from Flint Engineering in 1979. Upon retirement, he was able to enjoy his favorite pastime of fishing and eventually ended up on his farm in Cooke County. Dave was well liked by all that knew him and he never met a stranger. He always had a tall tale to spin for anyone who would listen. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Stella Poyner. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, Larry E. Poyner Sr. and wife, Cissy; daughter, Glenna G. Bingham and husband, Dwight; son, David L. Poyner and wife, Ilene, all of Odessa; seven grandchildren, Tammy Mills, Larry Poyner Jr., Debbie Jenkins, Beth Poyner, Kayla Tibbets and Belinda Bingham, all of Odessa, and Cissy Marie Kanmore of Hobbs, N.M.; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, W.L. and wife, Jody Poyner of Odessa, George and wife, Geneva Poyner of Choctaw. Okla., and J.D. and wife, Mary Poyner of The Colony. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as friends and other relatives. Whitson was born Nov. 19, 1912, in Fairfax, Okla., to Dove and Emma Bailey Whitson. He passed away Jan. 3, 2000, at Memorial Hospital & Medical Center in Midland. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sunset Memorial Chapel with Rev. James R. Ottemess officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Whitson served in the Army during World War II in the 20th Air Force and was stationed in Guam. He came to Odessa in 1948. He was the owner of the Pepsi-Nesbitt Bottling Company. He was a member of the Odessa Country Club for 40 years, a member of the McFarland Lodge and a Shriner. He was a former president of the Permian Basin Bottlers Association. Survivors include his wife, Vera Whitson; daughter, Karen Snoddy of Odessa; sisters, Deane Moore of Dallas, Thelma Henson of Midland and Catherine Boucher of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren, Heather and Craig Snoddy of Odessa; and nephew, Douglas Henson and his wife, Carol, of Midland. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. The family request that memorials be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association in Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Lorenzo Zuniga, 74, of Odessa died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in Odessa. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Fidelo Lugo officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home. He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Big Spring. He was preceded in death by his wife, Manuela Zuniga; father, Catarino Zuniga; and mother, Concepsion Chavarria.
