February 01, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Dr. James Franklin Harber Sr. BRACKETVILLE, Texas — Dr. James Franklin Harber Sr. was born March 5, 1918, in Knox County, Texas, and raised in Munday, Texas. He entered the Kingdom of God on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and his D.D.S. from Baylor Dental College. He practiced dentistry in Pecos and Odessa until his retirement in 1976. He then moved to Brackettville, where he came out of retirement, donated his dental equipment to and was instrumental in establishing a state-funded children’s dental clinic in Kinney County. He retired again in 1984. Dr. Harber served in the Army during World War II and continued to serve in the Army Reserve thereafter, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He also served as director of civil defense for the West Texas sector. He contributed many hours to civic and community endeavors and was a recipient of numerous awards and honors. He was very active in the local Masonic Lodge in which he held the office of treasurer during 1999. He is survived by his loving children, James Harber Jr., Tom White and Lori Harmon; his daughter-in-law, Jodie Harber; son-in-law, Danny Harmon; and his precious granddaughter, Halani Harber. Doc was loved by his family friends, patients and community and will be sorely missed by all. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Methodist Church in Brackettville. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery. The family requests donations be made to Fort Clark Historical Society c/o Frank Cheaney, P.O. Box 345, Brackettville, TX 78832, in lieu of flowers. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Barbara Heloise Whitman, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She was born in Drumwright, Okla., April 9, 1915. She and her husband of nearly 67 years resided in Odessa since the mid 1940s. They owned Whit’s Liquor from the mid 1940s to 1953. She was widowed Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000. Heloise was a talented artist with a generous heart who painted, crocheted and quilted. She also loved flower gardening. She was employed by Barrett’s Automotive in the 1950s and 1960s and was a past member of the American Business Women’s Association. She is survived by daughter, Barbara Carl; grandchildren, Debra L. Trout, Beverly A. Green-Durand and Karen S. Green; niece, Sharon Halbrook; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family plans a private graveside service Wednesday, Feb 2, 2000.
