February 29, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — David Clayton Collier, 82, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Loraine. Mr. Collier was a resident of Odessa since 1937. He worked for Sunshine Iron Works, Jude Manley Gulf and for 21 1/2 years was a Deputy for the Ector County Sheriff’s Department. He served his country in the Army during World War II and belonged to the American Legion, National Rifle Association, Sheriffs Association of Texas, Colorado City Historical Museum and Sherwood Baptist Church since 1955. He also enjoyed fishing, liked to cook breakfast and do carpentry work. Mr. Collier was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue James; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Collier of Odessa; daughters, Brenda K. (Dan) Jamierson of Odessa, Peggy L. (Tommy) James of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Ruth A. (Laura) Collier of Austin; brothers, Cecil Collier of Oxnard, Calif., Douglas Collier of Belton; sisters, Alma Brock of Mineola, Ada Thompson of Odessa; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Hiser officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Loraine Cemetery in Loraine. Olivas Jimenez ODESSA — Jacob Jimenez was born March 22, 1984, and was called home by his Lord Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000. Jacob touched the lives of all those he meet, never meeting anyone he didn’t like — unless of course, you were his opponent on the football field. OHS football was his game. Jacob had the ability to brighten up your day with that sparkle in his eyes and that dynamite smile of his that seemed to be contagious to all who were near. Jacob was a good son and a good friend. He, along with that beautiful smile of his, will be greatly missed. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Revs. David Herrera and Tom Kelly officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Public visitation will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Dean Gallegos. David Herrera of Fort Stockton, Mario and Diana Urias of El Paso; and 48 cousins. _________________________________________________________________ MIDLAND — The photograph of Doyle Land was taken at an actual fire that "The Bear" was busy extinguishing. Unknown to Doyle, the photo was taken by a photographer with a telephoto lens at a safe distance from the burning hot oil truck in a rural area of Midland. The family feels as though this photograph captured the spirit of their father. He fought his battle with cancer with the same spirit. Doyle was born June 21, 1933, in Lohn to Ross and Pearl E. (Bloomer) Land. He was reared and educated in Richland Springs. Following high school he entered the Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He married Barbara Ann Vaughan in Goldthwaite Sept. 29, 1956. She preceded him in death July 27, 1999. Mr. Land was employed with the city of Midland Fire Department from June 1955 to September 1984. He became a driver in 1958, then a captain in August 1965 and battalion chief in January 1973. He was known as "The Bear." He was also the owner of Midland Fire Extinguisher Company since 1965. He died at a local hospital Sunday, February 27, 2000. Mr. Land is survived by son. Stephen Ross Land and his wife, Denise, and their sons, Keith and Jacob, of Midland; son, Dale Eugene Land and his wife, Doylene, of Odessa; Patrick Vaughan Land and his wife, Linda, and their children, Cara, Brianna, and McKenzie, of Gardendale; daughter, Melissa A. Land of Midland; brothers, Ross Land Jr. of Arlington, Jerry Don Land of Arlington, Odean Land of San Saba, and Kenneth A. Land of Edna. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Ellis Funeral Home. Funeral services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Crestview Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Ashlock officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. Box 2621, Midland, Tx, 79701. _________________________________________________________________ Lila Maxine McCauley CANTON — Lila Maxine McCauley, 81, of Bronte died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, in Bronte. Graveside services were Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Haven of Memories Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Eubank Funeral Home. She was born April 1, 1918, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to Charles and Myrtle Davis. She married Sherman Smith in 1940 in Joplin, Mo. In 1950, they moved to Odessa, where they raised their three daughters. In 1964, Maxine and Sherman moved to Canton. He died in 1976. She married Loyd McCauley and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1981. Following his death she moved to Bronte in 1997. She was a member of the Bronte Church of Christ. She had a special place in her heart for the Medina Children’s Home of Medina. She loved the Scripture II Cor. 5:8. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Kay Braswell and Phyllis D. Poe, both of Bronte, and Pamela Ann Morte of Bay City; granddaughter, Shaye Coalson and Christy Griffin, both of Bronte; grandsons, Blane Braswell of Bronte, Blake Braswell of Garden City, Trey Morte of Conroe and Todd Morte of Kingwood; and 17 great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Eula Mae Turner Jones Culvahouse, 95, of Odessa died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Avalon Nursing Center. Mrs. Culvahouse was born Jan. 6, 1905, in Katempcy in Mason County and moved to Odessa in 1987 from Kermit. She married Charlie Jones on Feb. 19, 1924, in Brownwood. He preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1925. She married James S. Culvahouse on April 29, 1927 in Coleman. He preceded her in death Dec. 28, 1994. "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13:5 Many of us have heard her quote this verse. Over the years, she faithfully has trusted God to keep this promise. She was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church. She served in the ministry with her husband, who pastored many Pentecostal churches in West Texas. Submitting to God’s call, she so willingly cared for families within the church and for visiting pastors. Her home was busy as she provided for a family with eight children. Her passions were quilting, doll making and collecting, cooking and sewing. She always enjoyed singing gospel hymns. She unselfishly gave to her husband, children and grandchildren without a single complaint. She was a sacrificial giver and a lady with a quiet, gentle spirit. She was a prayer warrior. God is truly blessing her now with the rewards she so deserves. Today, she is happily reunited with those gone before her: husband, James S. Culvahouse; son, Eugene Culvahouse; daughter, Dorothy Phillips; and grandchildren, Nita Kay Norwood and James Earl Culvahouse. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Alice Culvahouse of Brownfield, Wayne and El Wanda Culvahouse of Midland and Nancy Culvahouse of Odessa; daughters and sons-in-law, Lucile and Leonard Granbery of Dekalb, Florence and Sherman Norwood and Mary and Don Lawson, all of Odessa, and Beverly and J.J. St. Germain of Alamogordo, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Midge Weinheimer of San Antonio. The family suggests memorials be made to Home Hospice. Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the First United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Terry Pugh officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Jimmy Granbery, Jack Lawson, Dan Lawson, Dean Clemmer, Bryan Culvahouse, Steve Munsell, Herb Pearce and James Martin. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Willie Elijah "Red" Huddleston, 85, beloved husband of Selma Huddleston and beloved father of Melba Freeman, Kenneth Huddleston and Billie Jo Freeman, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home in Odessa surrounded by his family. Mr. Huddleston married his wife of 60 years, Selma Marie Tuckness, Nov. 18, 1939. They moved to Goldsmith with Phillips Petroleum Co. in 1950, where he worked until retiring in 1976. During that time, he moved his family to live in Odessa. After retirement from Phillips, Mr. Huddleston worked seven years for United Bearing Co. and seven years as a janitor for the Ector County Independent School District until health problems forced him to retire from working. Mr. Huddleston was a high school athlete and in 1937 won a state championship in the 880-yard run. He also played for the Phillips Petroleum semi-pro softball team. Mr. Huddleston’s hobbies included raising chickens, gardening, collecting coins, coffee mugs and coaching softball for Calvary Baptist Church, winning the City championship in 1973. He was a Christian who truly loved the Lord and served as deacon for many years. At the time of his death he was a member of The Church in Odessa. Mr. Huddleston is survived by his wife Selma; children, Melba and Robert Freeman of Odessa, Kenneth and Carol Huddleston of Big Spring, Billie Jo and Jim Freeman of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Karen Freeman of Odessa, Robbie Jo and Michael Morris of Lubbock, Brian Huddleston of Charlotte, N.C., and Scott and Kori Huddleston of Plano; brothers, Cicero Huddleston of Ontario, Calif., and Doc Huddleston of Cypress Grove, Calif.; sisters, Carrie Mae Lewis of Andrews and Myrtle Annella of Bull Head City, Nev. The family suggests memorials to Vista Care Hospice or the American Diabetes Association and a special thanks to Vista Care Hospice and Kendra Skalinda for her compassion and support. A special thanks to our family and friends for prayers, support and encouragement during our Daddy’s illness. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Terence Portegies ODESSA —Terence Portegies, 29, of Odessa passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. He was born Feb. 8, 1971, in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at St. Luke’s Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Strempke officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Terencemoved to Odessa from the Netherlands as an exchange student and graduated from Odessa High School in 1989. He moved back to Odessa for good in December 1997. In May 9, 1998, he married Caroline Ferguson in Odessa. He was an avid soccer player and fan. Terence was a very strong young man, and he fought a courageous battle with cancer and leukemia. He always wore a smile and he loved to make people laugh. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Portegies of Odessa; and his parents, Hans and Hannie Portegies of the Netherlands; his mother and father-in-law, Gary and Cheryl Ferguson of Odessa; brother-in-law, Chris Ferguson of Odessa; sister-in-law, Cathy Ferguson of Fort Worth; grandmothers-in-law, Caroline Bishop of Odessa and Glenys Ferguson of Odessa; uncle-in-law, Marvin Ferguson of Odessa; and several aunts and cousins in Holland. Pallbearers will be Randy Elrod, lan Bell, Darrel Cleere, Larry Davisson, Philip Notley, Michael Smith, Justin York, Bobby White, Chris Stucks and Brian Loving.
