March 15, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Bessie Standley, 96, of Odessa died Monday, March 13, 2000, at a local nursing facility. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Jones officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. She was born March 13, 1904, in Checotah, Okla. She married Harrold Vaden Standley in 1922 in Santa Anna. He preceded her in death in 1952. Mrs. Standley had lived in Odessa since 1947. She graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1927 and received her master’s from Sam Houston Teachers College in 1945. She was an English teacher for the Ector County Independent School District and Odessa College for 50 years. She was a member of Parkview Church of Christ. Survivors include her nephews, Don Smith of Odessa, A. Richard Smith of Fort Worth, David G. Smith of Odessa and Jack Watkins of Ruidoso, N.M.; nieces, Alice Cothron and Beth Luttrell, both of Hendersonville, Tenn. The family suggests memorials to Odessa Christian School or Lubbock School of Preaching. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Sierra Renee Hernandez ODESSA — Sierra Renee Hernandez, 2 months old, passed away March 12, 2000. She was born Jan. 1, 2000, in Odessa. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services are to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Sierra is survived by her mother, Raquel Alonzo Soto; father, John Joseph Hernandez; brother, Nathan Ray Soto of Odessa; stepbrother, Mark Anthony Vasquez of Kansas; stepsister, Destiny Nykole Hernandez of Odessa; grandparents, Kelly Alonzo, Wanda Henson, Melesio Hernandez; great-grandparents, Elizabeth Sipnefski, Johnny Ocon, Lydia Soto, Pantilo Soto, Lena and Sam Alonzo of San Angelo and Carmen Hernandez of Odessa; aunts and uncles, Nicole Henson, Anna Soto, Amy Soto, Henry Soto Jr., Chris Ocon and Jesse Diaz. Services by Odessa Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Fred S. Wagner ODESSA — Fred S. Wagner, 88, of Odessa died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Don Turskey officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born Dec. 2, 1911, in Jack County. He married Melvia Maurine Baker Oct. 19, 1940, in Colorado City. Mr. Wagner moved to Odessa in 1943. He retired from Loffland Brothers Drilling Company as a motorman after 31 years of service. He played baseball on a farming community team and was approached by a major league team to be a pitcher. In his adult life, he continued to be an avid baseball fan. He always tried to do his best and was a hard worker. He was one of 12 children and was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Melvia Maurine Wagner of Odessa; son, Stanley Wagner of Odessa; daughter, Glenda Rae Holder of Odessa; brothers, Jack Wagner and Cliff Wagner, both of Colorado City; sisters, Amber Oden of Westbrook, Dorothy Reese of Levelland, Una Goswick of Big Spring and Wanda Jamison of Silver; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to Odessa Christian School, Odessa Meals On Wheels or Permian Basin Alzheimer’s Association.
