March 21, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ James Larry Powell IRAAN — James Larry Powell, 65, of Odessa, and formerly of Iraan, died at his home Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Odessa. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at the Restland Cemetery in Iraan with the Rev. Dan Fontenot officiating. Services are under the direction of Shafter-Nichols Chapel of Iraan. Larry was born April 8, 1934, in McCamey to Owen Kermit Powell and Pansy Cameron Powell. Larry attended public school in Iraan, graduating in May of 1952 as valedictorian of his graduating class. He served as president of the student council during high school. He attended Abilene Christian University from 1952 to 1956 and earned a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry in May of 1956, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also attended the University of Texas Dental School and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a chemist in Odessa for Continental Products for more than 10 years. He was a member of the Washington Avenue Church of Christ in Odessa. Larry was run over by a drunk driver while riding a small motorcycle when he was 12 years old and survived the accident with serious head injuries. He began to suffer from seizures in his teens, and the problems stemming from his head injury continued to progress until he was forced to take disability in his 50s. Regardless of his suffering, he always had a smile on his face and befriended anyone he encountered. He will be sorely missed by his friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.K. Powell of lraan; his older brother, Owen Kermit Powell Jr.; his youngest brother, Gene Allen Powell; and his nephew, Steven Neal Howell. Larry is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Knight and brother-in-law, Earl K. Knight, of Odessa; nephew, Kenneth Wayne Howell of San Antonio; niece, Helen Marie Kashiwa; one great-niece, Alyssa Kashiwa; and one great-nephew, Patrick Kashiwa, all of Pomona, N.Y.; a very special friend, Berta Calzada, of Odessa; and a host of other friends and neighbors. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Georgia Goodson-Walker, 76, of Odessa died of natural causes and went to be with her Lord on Friday, March 17, 2000. She was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Dublin, Texas, to G.W. and Georgia Goodson of DeLeon. She is survived by her brother and sisters, Elda Goodson of Freer, Clifftine Brumbelow of DeLeon and Nellie Beazley of Odessa. Georgia also is survived by her three children, Colleen Wooten and her husband, Mike, of Wentzville, Mo., Nicky Cook and his wife, Deborah, and Liz Hale-Johnson and her husband, Craig, all of Odessa. Her grandchildren include, Vann and Scott Wooten of Wentzvilte, Mo.; Leah Wooten of Tampa, FIa.; Nicole, Nicholas and Natalie Cook, all of Odessa; and Brian Hale, Mike Hale, Shawn Hale, Chenelle Archer, James Archer, Dustin Johnson and Jessica Johnson, Patricia Loren, Virginia Dawn and Amanda Walker, all of Odessa. Her great-grandchildren are Ashley Olliff and Sarah Elizabeth Hale. Georgia was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, and she loved the Praise and Worship service as well as her Sunday school class. Previously, she had been a member of University Park Church, where she was actively involved from working in the kitchen to singing in the choir. Most Sundays, you could find her singing and cooking in her kitchen for family and friends. No one could pass up her homemade hot rolls. Her grandchildren think she was the best grandmother in the whole world. She lived a life truly devoted to her Lord Jesus Christ, and we will never forget her kindness to others and her excitement for living. She was an inspiration to many. She fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. She truly will be missed by all. Public visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2000, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday March 22, 2000, at Immanuel Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Riley officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to Immanuel Baptist Church Living Memorial, 4020 University Blvd., Odessa, Tx 79761. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Edith Wood, 77, of Odessa, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her residence. She was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Celeste. She married John Gordon Wood in 1939 in Celeste. Mrs. Wood moved to Odessa in 1962 from Carlsbad, N.M. She was a very active member of Central Baptist Church. She retired from Medical Center Hospital in 1986. She liked to work in the yard and loved spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wood, in 1994; daughter, Linda Oak in 1996; and a brother, L.D. Witt. She is survived by her son, Gordon Wesley Wood of Austin; daughters, Norvela Gates of Odessa and Latreshia Mitchell of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Panzy Johnson of Greenville; and caregiver, Bonnie Sheldon of Odessa. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Nick Gates officiating. Special thanks to everyone at Home Hospice.
