March 30, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Corine Alexander Moore died Monday, March 27, 2000, in San Marcos at the age of 86, following a brief illness. She was the mother of San Marcos Mayor Billy G. Moore. Mrs. Moore was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Hunt to Mary Rebekah Campbell and Emmett Eugene Alexander, the second youngest of 11 children. Her family moved to the Staked Plains of West Texas near Littlefield where her family lived in a half dugout home and worked as sharecroppers. Mrs. Moore’s father died when she was nine and her mother, a woman of remarkable spirit and resilience, and her oldest brother, Percy, continued to raise the family. Corine Alexander married Arthur Franklin Moore in 1941 in Borger. They were the parents of Billy Glenn Moore and Michael Dale Moore. Her husband preceded her in death in 1960. Mrs. Moore worked in retail stores, including the Model Shop and Skibells Dress Shop, in Odessa for many years. Upon her retirement in 1986, she became very active with the Glory Choir of the Second Baptist Church of Odessa, which performed across the state of Texas. She was universally respected and loved by many and was regarded as a woman of grace, courage and great faith. Mrs. Moore lived independently in Odessa until last year, when she moved to Redwood Springs Retirement Center in San Marcos to be near her family. She is survived by her sons, Billy G. Moore of San Marcos, Michael Dale Moore of San Antonio; daughter-in-law, Marsha Moore and granddaughters, Marissa and Michal Moore of San Marcos; stepson and his wife, Robert Franklin and Ruth Moore of Denver; a special niece, Eugenia Miles, who looked after her daily needs for several years; and many other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Troy officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Moore’s memory to the Second Baptist Church of Odessa or the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center of San Marcos. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Services for Mary Louise Van Horn, age 87, of Lubbock are scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2000, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Van Horn died Monday, March 27, 2000, at her residence in Lubbock after a lengthy illness. She was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Grandview, daughter of Charles and Vela Briscoe. She attended Texas Christian University, graduating in 1934. She moved to Pecos where she began teaching school at Pecos Elementary. On July 14, 1935, she married Gage Van Horn. Mrs. Van horn moved to Odessa in 1957, where she lived until 1999. She taught school at Burleson Elementary for 13 years, and served on the Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary for 20 years. Mrs. Van Horn was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. She belonged to the Odessa Country Club, the Blue Chippers Investment Club and the Bloys Camp Meeting Association. Her husband, Gage Van Horn, preceded her in death in 1983. Survivors Include her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Buddy Furgerson of Lubbock; son and daughter-in-law, Gage And Virginia Van Horn of Houston; sisters, Betty Rentfro of Pleasanton, Sarah Casstevens of Lillian and Rose Lee Williamson of Grandview; grandchildren, Paige Furgerson of Columbus, Ohio, Margaret Van Horn of Dunwoody, Ga., Cindy Schmidt of Lubbock and Michael Van Horn of Austin; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Kinley Schmidt of Lubbock. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Louise Van Horn Scholarship endowment fund, office of development, Texas Tech University, PO Box, 41081, Lubbock, Texas, 79409, or Vista Care Hospice in Lubbock. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Rozelle Hight ODESSA — Rozelle Hight, 84, of Odessa died March 29, 2000, at her residence. She was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Concho County. She married R.V. Hight Nov. 12, 1933, in Wagram. Mrs. Hight moved to Odessa in 1982 from Rochelle. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and loved her Sunday school class. She loved to cook, work jigsaw puzzles, quilt, crochet and took care of her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.V. Hight, in 1982; her parents; and 14 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sons, Howard Hight of Odessa and Roy Hight of Tonawanda, N.Y.; six granddaughters; and 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Family visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2000, at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. Clydel Chapman officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Little Saline Cemetery in London, Texas, with Tracy Watson officiating. Pallbearers will be great-great-grandsons, Luke Watson and Trevor Senn; and men of the church. If desired, memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church parking lot fund. Wayne Flowers officiating. Burial will be at Gladewater Memorial Park. Arrangements by Croley Funeral Home. She was born April 19, 1931, in Healdton, Okla., to the late Luther and Ora Kennedy. She died Tuesday, March 28, 2000. She was a homemaker, an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Ages and Stages Sunday school class and the Dorcas Bible Study Group. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Claude Straub of Houston; grandsons, Craig Wallace Straub and Clinton Wayne Straub, both of Houston; brothers, Sherman Kennedy of Gladewater and Ralph Kennedy of East Mountain; sisters, Ruth Downing and Oretha Hyden, both of Gladewater; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Thompson; brothers, Bobby Kennedy and Arlie Delaet. Honorary pallbearers will be the George Kutch Men’s Bible Class of First United Methodist Church.
