April 2, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ James Wilburn Wilson ODESSA — On Sunday, March 26, 2000, Jim Wilson passed away, just as we all knew he would, on a job. At the time of death, he was working for Trigon-Sheehan on a job in Raton, N.M., for El Paso products as chief inspector. He will be greatly missed by all. Jim was best known for the time he spent welding in the Odessa area. Starting out in 1955, with Pas-O-Tex Pipeline in Wink, after 13 years, he went to work for Transwestern a couple of years before going out on his own and finishing up being the welder foreman for McVean & Barlow in 1984. Jim was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Hayworth, Okla., to Edward and Annie Boyd Wilson. After graduating from Idabell High School, he attended Oklahoma State University. He joined the Navy and served as a first class boatman’s mate. He was an outdoorsman, where he loved to hunt with his son and friends. They also enjoyed a cabin in Ruidoso, N.M., with family and friends. His hobbies were his family, watching basketball, cooking and his work. As one friend said and others will agree, "He was the real deal." He is survived by his wife, Carolyn F. Wilson, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; children, DeAnn Wilson and Chris Wilson, both of Odessa; sisters, Louise and husband, Truman Byrne, of Oklahoma, Ione and husband, Buck McBrayer, of Washington; brothers, Alvin and wife, Mary B. Wilson, and Floyd Wilson, both of Oklahoma; grandchild, Keli; stepgrandchildren, Lauren, Colton, Kendall and Haley; stepsons, Jeff and wife, Melissa Miller, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Quin Miller of Roswell, N.M.; and his previous wife, Carolyn R. Wilson, of 0dessa. He was laid to rest at the National Veterans Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M., Thursday, March 30, 2000. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorials be made to St. John’s Episcopal School, P.O. Box 3046, Odessa, Texas, 79760. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Mass for Eva Flores Ortiz, 80, of Odessa will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Fidelo Lugo officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Ortiz died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at her residence. She was born April 27, 1919, in Grand Prairie. She married Adolfo V. Ortiz on Feb. 3, 1943, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. Mrs. Ortiz was a homemaker and a Catholic. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gabriel and Sapopa Flores; son, Jose Luis Ortiz; and a sister, Francisca Flores. Survivors include her husband, Adolfo V. Ortiz of Odessa; sons, Pete Ortiz and Tony Ortiz, both of Odessa; daughter, Rosemary Montoya of Odessa; brother, Roque Flores of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ Bessie M. Butler ARLINGTON — Bessie Marie Butler, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 89, went to be with her Lord Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Avalon Place Nursing Home in Odessa. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2000, Greenwood Mount Olive Funeral Home, in Arlington. Bessie was born June 9, 1910, in Madill, Okla. She came to Longworth, Texas, with her family in a covered wagon at the age of 13. In 1933, she married George Butler, who preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1969. They resided for many years in Sweetwater. In 1953, the Butlers moved to Arlington, Texas, where Bessie lived until 1997. Bessie, or "Meme," as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, loved to work in her flower beds and garden. She enjoyed all the types of handwork, including quilting and crocheting. "Meme" loved to share her handiwork with her family. Survivors include sons, James Butler and wife, Cle, of Odessa, Carroll Butler and wife, Judy, of Arlington; grandchildren, Cathy Kirby of Odessa, Pat Butler of Arlington, Scott Butler of Houston and Susie Grantham of Hanburg, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Brandon Norton, Amanda Kirby, Ashley Butler, Matt Kirby, Raschel Kirby, Tyler Butler, Lindsey Butler, Courtnee Butler, Cacey Butler and Ryan Grantham. Mrs. Butler was a longtime member of Randol Mill Road Church of Christ in Arlington. _________________________________________________________________ MIDLAND — Blanche Strauss was born on August 12, 1913, in Providence, R.I. She passed away Saturday, April 1, 2000, at her residence. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Temple Beth El Cemetery in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Mrs. Strauss was a member of the Midland Opera Guild, Temple Beth El and the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El. She was preceded in death by her husbands, A.B. Strauss on March 7, and Norman Katz on May 10, 1969. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Charles Silverman; grandchildren, Tracee B. Silverman, Jennifer and Aaron French; and her brother, Joseph Golditch of Cranston, R.I. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Services for Gladys Marie Deary, 67, of Odessa are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Parker Heights Christian Church with the Rev. Paul Weymouth officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Mrs. Deary died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at her residence. She was born Nov. 9, 1932, in Reagan. She married Chester Deary on Dec. 1, 1952, in Clovis, N.M. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Deary; her parents, Will Poole and Mary French; a sister, Frankie Dangerfield; and a brother, Isom Poole. Mrs. Deary moved to Odessa in 1963. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and also was a graduate of cosmetology school. She worked as a housekeeper for Dr. and Mrs. Clark for many years. She was a member of Parker Heights Christian Church. Survivors include her daughters, Chestine Jones, Linda Deary and Tammie Deary, all of Odessa; brothers, Chester Poole of Lufkin and Grover Poole of Marlin; sister, Lorraine Pool of Marlin; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Archie Julia Terry was born February 2, 1915, in Jacksonville to James and Annie Jennings Branaman. She passed away at her residence on March 31, 2000. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, April 3, 2000, at Terrace Hills Baptist Church with Danny Willis officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Archie came to Odessa in 1960. She was married to T.J. Mitchell for 24 years and then married Elmo Terry on April 9, 1971. They both preceded her in death. Mrs. Terry taught Bible studies all of her adult life. She had worked for Anthony’s and for Sunshine laundry for many years as a seamstress. She was a member of Terrace Hills Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Arlene Collins of Portland, Ore.; brother, Dale Branaman of Lubbock; sister, Jackie McWhorter of Mexia; niece, Joyce Philen of Odessa; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and special friends, Vera Monroe of Midland and Opal Anglin of Odessa. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright © 2000 Odessa American.
