May 03, 2000 Permian Basin Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Anna Modelle Orsborn was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Love County, Okla., to Elva and Lula Orsborn. Her parents preceded her in death. Mrs. Baker worked for Beauty Fair USA, from which she retired. She was a licensed beautician and worked at the old Grammer Murphy Beauty Salon. She and Mr. Baker have resided in Midland for 42 years. She was married to H.B. Baker for 52 years. Mrs. Baker was a lifelong Baptist. Mrs. Baker will be loved and missed by many. Survivors include her husband, H.B. Baker of Midland; daughter, Mrs. Rheta Courtney and husband of Odessa; sisters, Ruth Conti and her husband of Flower Mound and Mrs. Lydia Burns of Dallas; brother, Mr. John Orsborn of Quitman; granddaughters, Theresa Siebold and her husband; and Mrs. Melissa Gallagher and her husband; one niece; and four great-grandchildren. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Curtis Collins, 77, of Odessa died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. He was born June 16, 1922, in Post, Texas. He married Mary Frances Gooden on June 13, 1941. She passed away in August 1970. He later married Geraldine Brewer on Feb. 18, 1987, in Odessa. Mr. Collins moved to Odessa in 1951. He was with Collins Roofing & Steel Metal. He was a former owner of Collins Acoustical Co., in Lubbock. He was a member of the Chuck Wagon Gang. He was a 32 Degree Mason and member of Masonic Lodge #1338. He was also a Shriner. He received a Purple Heart during World War II. He was Baptist. He was preceded in death by one grandchild. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Collins of Odessa; daughters, Sharan Stephenson and husband, Joe, of Lubbock, and Jennifer McNabb and husband, Phil, of Lubbock; son, Gerald Gillette and wife, Roberta, of Pittsburg, Kan.; brother, Marlin Collins and wife, Yvonne, of Odessa; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to The Disabled Veterans or the Make A Wish Foundation. Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — A.L. Houston, 95, of Odessa died May 1, 2000, at his residence. He was born Jan. 27, 1905, in Stanton to Ella and W.Y. Houston. He married Gracie Fern Teague in 1940. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton. Mr. Houston grew up on the family ranch south of Stanton. During his early school years he and his sister, Beulah Mae, were educated by a tutor. After moving to Stanton, he graduated from Stanton High School; and attended John Tarleton College at Stephenville. He was a bookkeeper for Eiland Motor Company in Stanton and was an underwriter for Great Southern and Kansas City Life Insurance. He moved to Odessa in 1944 and was employed as a bookkeeper for E&Y Drilling. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He is survived by his wife, Gracie Houston of Odessa; daughter, Kay Cook and her husband, Lawson, of Houston; and a nephew, Jerry Hall of Austin. (www. wilsonfuneral.com) _________________________________________________________________ ODESSA — Carl Victor Maddoux, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Maddoux was born to Alberta Ashworth and John West Maddoux on the 27th day of August 1917, in the piney woods of Harris County. He moved to Odessa in 1951 and became the vocational agriculture teacher at Odessa High School for 35 years. Mr. Maddoux retired from teaching in 1988 and remained in Odessa during this time. He was the father of three children, Jerry Mark "Buddy" Maddoux, deceased; daughters, Lana "Sam" Narey of Lubbock and Carla L. Maddoux of Odessa. He also is survived by a former wife, Dean Maddoux of Lubbock; and two granddaughters, Elaine Cogburn and husband, Gary Cogburn, of Lubbock, and Lorrie Ault and husband, Steve Ault, of Loganville, Ga. He also is survived by three great granddaughters, Natanie Cogburn of Lubbock, and Taryn and Taylor Ault of Loganville, Ga. Mr. Maddoux also is survived by the many, many students he taught over the years and will be missed greatly by family and friends alike. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Heard officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Arbie Marie Rampy Johnson MARFA — Arbie Marie Rampy Johnson, 93, of Midland, formerly of Marfa, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, Midland nursing center. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at First Christian Church in Marfa with Rev. Duncan Parish officiating. Burial will follow in Marfa Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home in Marfa is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 29, 1906, in Salado, to T. J. and Bethsaida Rampy. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor Normal School in Belton, Abilene Christian College and Sul Ross State College. She was teaching school at Redford where she met and married Warren Buford Johnson in 1929. They lived in Marfa until the death of Mr. Johnson in 1993. Mrs. Johnson taught at Blackwell School during World War II. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing for herself and her daughters. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Marfa for more than 60 years, and served in many capacities in the women’s work of the church, as well as on the church board. She was a member of the Marfa History Club, and served as president and then as treasurer for many years. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, former Presidio County Judge; her parents; her two brothers; five sisters; and one granddaughter. She is survived by her daughters, Sue Wray of Midland; Carol May and her husband, Ralph, of Georgetown and Marfa; son, Dr. Warren Johnson, and his wife, Patti, of Escondido, Calif. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
